I am 20 years old and have a 10:30 curfew. Tips on financial independence?
I am home from college for the summer, and my curfew is 10:30 pm. I'm a senior by hours, and it will be my 3rd year of college in the fall. I am currently taking summer classes, working, and volunteering. I need to get out of my parents house, but I don't know how it's feasible, since I will need to make enough $$ to pay for car insurance, car payments, rent, utilities, gas, food, and any other expenses, all while going to school, because if I move out, my parents are going to cut off all funding. Any tips on how to become cold-turkey financially independent? Oh, and they are paying for part of my college (that isn't covered in scholarships), too, so I'd have to pay for that too. Oh and reasoning with them or them changing their minds is not even remotely possible.

Listen just deal with it. I live by myself and I'm 21 my mother doesn't pay for any of my college but if i had the choice I would have her pay for school and still live at home. It is more stress than you would ever want and almost impossible to dedicate your time to school when you work 40 hours a week or more.

Bite your tongue and stick to their curfew until you finish college. It's a tough world out there and could get very expensive on your own even with an entry level position. The cons out weigh the pros at this point in your life. It's unfair but thats life.

Suck it up for another year until you have your degree. Or cut back on things so you can work more.

Just deal with it. Stay there as long as you can.

cupboardie
youve got a sweet deal, accept the curfew and wait it out. When you graduate you'll have all the freedom you need. You could become independent now, but surely all the time spent working and stress of supporting yourself would affect your studies?

Yinzer from Sixburgh
Can you stay in school year round and stay in the dorm? That sounds like a more attractive alternative than living under your parents' unreasonable curfew. If not, I'm afraid your best bet is just to suffer through it. Sorry.

While I agree that a 10:30 curfew for you is ridicoulous, unfortunately, unless you can afford to support yourself while you're going to college, you'll have to do what they say. Their house--their rules.

Depending on where in the country you live, waiting on tables or even delivering pizza is excellent tax-free money. If you can make 200 dollars a day then you can support yourself. I love in New Jersey and that Is what I make on average delivering pizza.

Suggested Motto : "I'm eating THIS sh*t with a spoon!"

It's only one more year, and working plus going to
school is a whole lot harder than putting up with
that silly curfew and any attendant bullsh*t.
You'd probably have less free time, and have to put yourself under more restriction than you now suffer.
Look at it as a job, and balance what you give up
with what you get.
Room & board + tuition is worth a lot.
Don't blow it.

Doctor Deth
of course it's not feasible to get out on your own right now - how you afford all those living expenses and go to school full time? relax and enjoy no responsibility while you can. the real world is H*LL. The 10:30 curfew is ridiculous, though - you're an adult

I'm 30 and wish I would have stayed at my parents a little longer been on my own since 18

get a job doing mail room 2ND shift ,some banks are good and they pay for your school (so you wont be as dependent for school)

in some places they have apartments that cater to college students, you share a 4 unit apt share living room and kitchen
your responsible for your part of the rent
http://www.campusrent.com

everyone talking junk about the 10:30 thing when you under someones roof you have to go by their rules.
with all the classes and volunteering you may have to be in by
10:30 just to study and rest

roxy667
Unfortunately for you, it seems like you have to just cope with their absurd rules for the time being. You will just have to move out the second you graduate from college. I'm sorry your parents are crazy.

One tip though, the more roommates you have the less you have to pay for bills. Maybe you can get a place with a couple of friends. Most colleges have roommate listings somewhere on campus.

Cleo loves her red cape!
A curphew? Your parents should not have control of your life like that, you are an adult. At the age of 19 I was out LATE. My parents didn't like it but they couldn't say much

I just left. I had a job and found a roommate and just left. I was waiting to be financially secure and it just wasn't working, so I just decided to jump in feet first it was tight to start with but things started to work out

Trust me I know it seems like you really want out, partly to expereince the freedom you deserve at 20 years old. But try to understand your parents do have your best interest at heart. My suggestion would be to stay at your parent's house but sit down and talk to them about what you could do to get a later curfew. Maybe you need to prove to them your resposible make a list of the reasons you desreve a little more freedom. Also take advantage of the fact that your parents are willing to pay so much for you. In this tought economy now it's hard for a fulltime worker to survive much less a parttime worker going to school. If your parent's trust you, and I think they do by the sound of everything you take on then they should let you have a little more freedom from their house rules.

drippinhonee
For the sake of your paid for education just stick it out. Im sure they mean well.

try getting another job & putting money in a savings account at the bank & hope it collects inerest
then you can have enough money to get your own place and have freedom & money to spend and everything!

Well, since you are living in their house, you need to follow their rules. 10:30 is super early for a 20-year-old, but it's a hard world out there, so unless you can make enough on your own to pay all your expenses, suck it up and deal with it.

Wow, after hearing things like this, I'm so happy I was not dependent on my parents financially after I went to college at 18. My parents didn't have the means to support me after I headed off to college, so they had no say in what I did. But, of course, the downside of that is that I have quite a bit in student loans that I'll be paying off until I'm 32.

wandalk78
I would say stick it out if you can because they are just trying to what is best for you. On the other hand, you are not a baby any more and may you could use some negotiating skills to move the curfew up till later.

Explain that this will help eleviate some of the financial pressure it is pputtiong on you and them and they will benefit in the long run because you will be putting some money away for a place when you graduate college.

I have never heard of a 20 year old having a curfew but it is their house and respect is a key issue. So respectfully negotiate and appeal to their younger side and remind them how it was to be 20 again and show them how responsible you really are by asking for a trial period if that what it takes.

Good Luck :)

I had a 10:30 curfew when i was 14...Get a summer job, then I would apply for student loans and stand up on your own...you are close to graduating so you will be able to pay them back soon enough.

Then again, I sort of wish I still lived at home. I bet you get home cooked meals and they give you cash when needed. I would recommend you to see if you can get a paid internship somewhere.

mark v
hey i am also 20 years old, and i live independent, and from my past lessons i would not move out if i were you. The reason i say this it almost impossible to mange enough time to work to make enough money to pay for every thing you need and to go to school cause part time doesn't pay enough for all of that i ended up joining the army to pay for my schooling and every thing i needed if i would have known what i know now back then i would have stayed liven with my parents till i finished collage then moved out. well i hope this helps a little

Sassy
LOL, curfew at 20. come on. Get a job save money and move out.

David
maybe they'd lift the curfew if you'd pay your own bills. If you're 20 and mommy and daddy are paying for your things then you deserve a curfew.

T N
Take out student loans. You can always pay them back when you graduate and start make good $$$
