Not really. You should keep enough in savings to live off of for 3 months, just in case something happens that you are not planning. |

Wow,if you only 23 with that amount money, you are in good shape than a lot people. Don't buy 529 college fund, because when kids go to college, the more you saved, the less grand your kids will get. Don't save in 401k either, becasue too many eldler now, the retirement fund is a big whole and you may never see your contribute after 40 years. Cash is the king, save ur cash and hide it. |

I think it's none of my business how much you've saved, however that you're putting away money at all is a good thing. Continue to INVEST in YOURSELF first but do so bearing in mind that you have a life also. In other words factor in fun. Being frugal and saving is good. Of course I d/k how much debt you're carrying vs your $7k in savings...but it's good that you save. Typically a rainy day fund should cover at least 3 months of expenses. PEACE! |

you;re probably in better shape than 90% of the people in the country - single moms or not |

Its not really a lot. You need 6 months worth of living expenses, so it depends what they are. I think you are good. But don't spend the money |

It's not a lot in terms of wealth.. but it's definately a start and for being a single mom it is definately admirable. |

No, it's not. That's a good emergency fund. Now, stop adding to that and instead start contributing to you company's 401k plan if offered. Then start dollar cost averaging into a Roth IRA. Finally, if there is money left over, open a 529 Plan and make regular monthly contributions to it for your kid's college education. But, remember, retirement first, then your kid's college plan. |

I think you're doing well. Too many people seem to be thinking you're asking if you should stop now or not, which you aren't.
You're doing wonderful at your age (assuming you're not carrying alot of debt with that).
Just keep adding to it.
And to whoever said that you should store your cash -- ignore them completely. They obviously don't understand compounding interest or company matches (if you're that lucky). If you keep investing in your 401K and they keep saving their cash, you will blow their money away when it's time to use it even though they may have paid substantially more.
Just keep it up -- financial freedom is great and will allow you to make better decisions (like paying loans off faster and saving on interest instead of having to draw it out to afford anything).
Good luck to you! |

Umm.. excuse me. Did you people read the questions? She is a SINGLE mother who is only 23 and has 7000 saved not counting other disposable income. I think that is pretty darn good, considering we are in a recession. A vast majority of Americans are struggling to buy gas and groceries, and she's still able to save this amount while raising a child on her own.
So, yes, I think that is quite a lot, considering. Just keep saving like you have been. |
