To double the money, use the 'Rule of 72'. Divide the number of years by 72 and the result will be the interest rate that you would need to double the money. e.g. 72 / 5 = 14.4%. This is not feasible from a bank or bond. This means that you would have to take some very high risk to get this return ( including losing some of your investment). Average return in stock market over many years is 8-10%. You will have to dial down your expectations.

Thinking like that is a great way to lose all of your money.

It's better to find traditional investments that have a track record of returns around 10%.

That you're asking about "get rich quick" ideas on Y!A shows that you really don't know of any "sure things." Why, then, would you take the advice of strangers, who have no vested interest in what happens to your cash?

I'd seek the help of a professional financial advisor, and learn to be content with steady asset growth.

First off, thank you for serving your country.

Don't worry about trying to double or triple the money. You are your wife are young, and the best way to get rich is to do things slow and steady. I would recommend taking a look at the book The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. It's helping my husband and I immensely.

He puts forth a plan for making sure you are out of debt, have an emergency fund set aside, and then focusing on investing for the future.

That 40K in your hand can get you off to a great start if you play it smart, and don't do anything overly aggressive with it.

Don;t worry about doubling or trippling it that quick, talk with your units financial advisor on how to invest it. use what you need, but invest the bulk of it and DO NOT touch it, leave it there for when you retire.

Are u working? Are you good with your hands? can you remodel a house?
Find a house in bad need of repair, sound, but dated in a good neighborhood. Buy it, move in, repair everything over a 1 1/2 year period then put it on the market. All the money you make from your principle residence is TAX FREE and you can take that exemption every two years. Plan it all out in advance, set a budget for yourself. Read up on the tax law.
Library and get a book by umberto cruz, a writer on real estate and investing.

At least 30k in a CD that makes at least 5.5 percent APY. Or you can try to put some money into an IRA still young in 40 yrs that 30k will be at least double if you choose the right IRA.

TSP good option if you go that route if your govt employee.
At least 10 k in an emergency fund in the savings account.

You could buy land in high market that will double in five years. Though hopefully that market doesn't crash.

Some banks offer a higher interest rate on having three accounts or more open.

Buy Zero Coupons with a 5 year duration... or, better yet, A Financial Advisor can help you better than a Yahoo Answer.
