I have a small problem like that also, what I find helps is if you open a new savings account and specifically request you don't get sent a cheque book / hole in the wall card / debit card for the account - make it *only* accessible through the banks branch.
Drop all your savings into the savings account so its out of reach from your spending habits, you can't impulsively buy what you don't have available directly.
It helps me! :) |

Only you can solve your "I gotta' have it, now" attitude and start saving money. |

every time you get money split it in half and let yourself only use half of it. put the rest of the money in a piggy bank or something so you cant get the money out unless you break it.
hope it helps!!! |

First of all figure out your your NECESSARY bills and add it all together. Things like rent, power, sewer, garbage, water, and groceries. Next figure out what your monthly income is and see if it is greater than your bills. if so your already off to a good start. Now try to figure out your frivolous spending. Stuff that you buy cuz you WANT it not NEED IT. Now stop buying that stuff and dig deep down inside and save your extra money by using your willpower, i know its tough, i don't have any myself. You may have to open a separate account in your bank to set this money aside in, or have someone you can trust with your money hold onto it for you.... the key word being TRUST. I know there isn't really much of that going around these days, so that one may not be an option for you. good luck. |

You have to become more responsible and realize you can't have everything and what is more important to you. The first thing you do when you get $ is put part in savings first, without fail and then don't take it out. Make up a % that you will put in-make it an reasonable amount because you can always put in more-and put it in. You must learn to budget yourself. |

The answer is very simple, stop spending. Unfortunately you have a serious problem, you get a kick out of frivolous spending. Like a poster ahead of me said, the problem is inside your head. Simply, stop spending. If you can't, get professional help. If you don't fix this problem you will be a financial wreck your entire life. BTW, your parents ARE NOT wrong. YOU are. They are trying to teach you the value of a dollar and so far have failed. When you understand this simple concept, only then will you appreciate what your parents are trying to teach you. Good luck. |

each pay check you get just try spending half of what you earned and save the rest. |

Give it to your parents. Tell them no matter what don't give you the money until it's time to go to the cross country thing. |

Every time you have money, set aside a certain amount, and keep it in an envelope, and take the rest and do what you want or need to do with it. |

Get a Christmas club account, you have to make monthly or weekly deposits of a certain amount, and you don't have access to it until Christmas time. I don't know when you plan on going on this trip, but winter is perfect for a Florida vacation. Talk to your local bank, tell them your situation and they might have a similar type of account that the money can't be withdrawn until a time specified by you. |

Pay yourself FIRST! I don't mean buy yourself stuff first, but consider "$X" a bill. Put it into an account that you cannot withdraw from without a second party (i.e. your parents) signing off on as well. Then do this religiously!! |

Start asking yourself this question:
"How many hours do I have to work in order to pay for this?"
Remember to use your net pay, not gross. Look at your take home pay, and divide it by the number of hours you work. That will tell you how much you net per hour.
You will be amazed at how long you actually have to work to afford a pair of shoes.
Really got me thinking about what I spend money on. |

I have the same problem. What I do is I have a savings account that I put 10-20% of all the money I receive. I try to forget that it's even there and I'll check it periodically like once a month to check the balance and the interest. |

Put it in a high interest account such as bonds and cd's. You normally can't take out any money for 5-10 years!! |

So your question is how do you get control of yourself.
I suggest you seek counseling. If you're serious about this. The problem is in your head. |

Instead of hiding it, give it to your parents to keep until the trip comes. Im sure they'd help you out with that. I dont have a problem at all because (like your parents) I usually buy things I need. You just need to get over the urge to buy all these pointless luxuries in life. |
