Rachel M | I am in debt and see no way of getting out. Help!? |
No, I'm not lazy. I work hard at my full-time job and make $25,000 a year (before taxes), but I worked it out and with all my expenses I have NO money left over to put into savings. I have rent, food, car insurance, gas, student loan payment and more, and that takes everything I make. To top it off I have $7000 in credit card debt from when I was a student and couldn't make ends meet. I have a degree in Mass Communications but haven't been able to find a higher paying job yet, though I am looking. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks. Additional Details Let me add a few additional points: I already live at home, but pay substantial rent to my parents. I could actually pay less rent if I lived with a roommate, but I have to stay because my mom is severely disabled and needs lots of care. That brings me to my second problem: because I must devote many hours to helping my mom, I simply don't have the time for a second job. Believe me, if I only had myself to worry about, I would definitely take another job and work my butt off. I live in a rural area, by the way, and public transportation is not available. |

I'm in a very similiar position and i'm finally getting my act togeather and working my way out of debt. Heres what you need to do:
First sit down with all your bills and pay check. Do a real budget including gas, insurance, rent, food, smokes, etc.. Make sure to include everything.
Then, look at your bills and see what you can get rid of. Examples are maybe lower you cell phone plan or get rid of it all togeather, cable bill, house phone, food etc.. See if you can lower any of your bills in anyway.
Next, figure to pay the minium on everything except your highest interest accuring debt. Your going to take the extra money you have each month and pay on that debt(while paying the min. on all other). Your main focus should be to get rid of that 7000 credit card and any other debt drawing high interest right away.
Now, you might want to look at getting a roommate or 2nd job. I know this doesn't sound great but if you don't be proactive on getting out of this debt it will come back to haunt you.
Now, carry a piece of a paper tracking all your expenses for the next month. Write down everytime you buy anything. You will see there are severeal few dollar items each day you buy taht you really don't need. Examples are lunch(take a lunch), coffee(take a cup with you), etc.. Just doing this you will see how you are spending ALL your money and that the little things really add up.
Keep working hard and you can do it. Just remember to not make any late payments on anything and work on getting your debt paid off one debt at a time. After you pay off one debt take the money you hwere paying to it and add it to your next debt. You are already used to spending that amount on bills anyways.
Live frugal.. Live like a broke college kid because you are still broke. If you have a car payment get rid of it and find something for a few thousand dollars or take a bus if you can. Keep looking for a new job but until then I think you should get a second job and roomate and all the sudden you will have plenty of extra money to get out of that debt. Good luck to you |

You have to learn to live within your means if you aren't already.
1. There is no harm in applying for a Forebearance on your student loans. Yes, interest will accrue, but you can postpone payment until you make more money.
2. Only have the bear necessities. That is, no cable, either cell phone or land line, but not both, no high speed internet (dial up is much cheaper, and you just need patience)
3. Consider working a part-time job simply to pay off the credit card debt. You will feel better about it, and it will help your score.
4. Live in a cheaper apartment or get a roomate to help offset some of the cost.
Hope some of this helps... |

$25k per year is nothing. Depending on where you live, you could be considered living in poverty. Here's what I recommend:
1. Apply for food stamps - don't be embarrassed, the syste is here to help us when we can't make ends meet.
2. Get a second job. Work evenings and weekend waiting tables or bartending if you can. You'll make great money. If you're embarrassed and people ask why, tell them you're tired of sitting in an office all day and miss the social interaction.
3. Consolidate or refinance your student loans. Make sure you lock in a low rate (under 5%) and you can probably get your payments lowered as well.
4. Sell your car. Just think of what you'll save in payments, gas and insurance! Carpool or take public transportation. |

Might be time to look into a second (part-time) job. |

Wouldn't you make twice that as a teacher? You could even be a military officer and get more than that. I think you need a career change. Check out teaching opportunities in Dallas, Texas. |

I understand your situation because I find I'm having a hard time making ends meet and I too am in debt. I think the cost of living has increased dramatically. One solution is to go to a credit agency. Look in the yellow pages for them. The preoblem with them is that it does hurt your credit score. Otherwise, just sit down with a good expense notebook and write down everythijng you spend money on. Sift out what you do not need. The key questions are: "What do I want?" versus "What do I need?" You can't have what you want right now, so just get used to it. Tackle your needs, systematically make payments, and budget well into future months to see where your money is going. After that, pray for an unknown relative to leave a bunch of money. Sorry. Also, just thought, get a higher paying job, |

If you can take mass transportation use that. You will cut down on insurance and gas. If you have a degree keep looking for a higher paying job. Don't do those Ameridebt stuff that you see on the t.v. that will only mess your credit up. Keep paying your credit card bill or you will find yourself in credit hell. Keep searching for a job, maybe get an extra (partime) job for the weekend. You can use that just to pay off the credit card. |

Have you tried consolodating the debt. Has the CCard gone into collections? They may be able to work with you on lowering the payment or breaking it up. I have heard and this sucks that they can also put your tax refund up to make the payments. Good luck with that. |

visit a personal finance advising web site, ask for an advisor's help, and follow the instructions closely.
Most will tell you something like this:
spend 30 days or so writing down every penny that you spend.
organize the results into a monthly spending plan - and stick to the plan. don't spend money you don't have.
compare the money going out to the money coming in
When there is more money going out than coming in, something has to be dropped or cut back. Either take on a second job, get a cheaper place to live, drop some expense which isn't essential.
Once the outgo meets the income, then begin working on the debts |

You need to setup a budget that will allow you save more money toward the future. The key is to keep your spending below your income. Since you have a number of fixed spendings - student loan, rent, food, etc, you need to trim the excess.
Look over all your spending and decide what is truly necessity and what is discretionary. Also don't overlook simple ways to downsize fixed spendings. One, look for a cheaper apartment, share the rent with a roommate, or live at home till you get back on your feet.
Check out the article below regarding setting up a budget for college students. It's written for college students but the principles applies to anyone. |

Here is what I recommend. Change your way of thinking. Be a non-conformist. Don't live like everyone else. Everyone else is up to their armits in debt and stressed and just getting by because they think they need to live like everyone else and they are only using the bare necessities.
For example- are there Mexicans living in your community? They work low-wage jobs, often have families and send money home to Mexico. How do they do it? First, they don't live alone- they live with a bunch of people in an apartment or trailer. So, rent and utilities are about 1/4. They usually share cars, so their transportation expenses are about 1/4. They don't eat all the expensive foods that north americans eat. They eat mainly tortillas and beans. That saves them about 1/2 of their food budget. And it's probably healthier. So, their expenses are about 1/3 of yours. Then, you can save money.
Another example- I have lots of clients who don't have driver's licenses. They find alternatives that are a lot cheaper. Mopeds, bicycles, walking, bus, public transportation, moving closer to work, getting a roommate who can drive them around, moving to the middle of town so they can walk everywhere, etc. It's not convenient- it's not what everyone does, but it saves a ton of money in insurance, gas, car repairs, etc.
Another example. I have clients who live on about $600/month. They even save money. How do they do it? Rent an apartment or trailer with some other people- $300/month. Get food stamps to cover food. Walk or catch a ride wherever you need to go- don't own a car.
I suggest you try some of the above ideas. Making more money in addition to the above is a good idea, but don't expect to earn your way out of debt because when you make more $$ your taxes go up and so do your bills somehow. Cut your expenses!
Best wishes. |
