Debt Is Dumb

You've already gotten blasted by some answers, so I will keep it reasonable. You have got to look in the mirror and make the person standing there behave themselves. There has got to be some planning and some delayed gratification.
Question 1: Do you do a written budget before the start of every month, telling every dollar where to go?
Question 2: What are your expenses?
Figure out the answers to those two questions and go buy My Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. (No , I do not work for Dave.) I will guarantee that 80% of the problem here is behavioral. I know thats like a kick in the head, and you probably won't like it, but you know I'm right.
I've been there and done it and I managed to fix it, so get past the emotion and start solving your problem. If you need help with a budget, post a question and I'll try to assist. |

The problem is not America. The problem is you.
But, that's why I'm not running for office, because that kind of advice doesn't win elections :-) |

How WELL You live, depends on how WISELY You spend your Money... Check out what's going on in your Checkbook- before You blame America for your Problems. Maybe You need to make some "better Choices"- so that Food can be One of them! :0 |

It seems that maybe you are not living within your means. I make a lot less than you and I can eat. Of course, you probably have a larger house and a newer car. |

In America? What is going on in your home? Do you have cable? Internet? A cell phone? A Car payment?
If you can't eat on $50K, then you have other problems. |

Dang it! I know just what you mean! I made about 125K last year, and just like my grandfather before me who never made more than $1.90/hr., I could't afford to spend more than 125k last year anymore than my grandfather, a great man who loved life zestfully, could not afford to spend more than the $1.90/hr. he made. Oh, yeah, I forgot I have to spend a lot less the 125K because my own kids must have schools, my old cars need roads to drive on, and the police and soldiers I need to live peacefully while making that 125K/yr. need to be paid by ME through taxes. Dang it. It really is hard to eat out every meal, have top-shelf meats, fruits, and pre-fab useless junk food for the times I stay home. Imagine, my grandfather actually ate potatoes, beans, rice, and simple veggies nearly every meal his whole life (89 years).
Grow up! I'm a high school teacher who works my butt off teaching kids whose families live and eat on about 21K a year, if their lucky to get that much. I have a wife, 3 kiddo's and actually, Gee!!! Gosh...started investing and making money in other ways so we can eat like Kings and Queens compared to the rest of the world. You're using a computer on probably a high-speed Internet connection with enough free time to write drivel like this question. Go learn to shop, cook, and get another job!
Hey, Stan the UnMan, it's easy to insult teachers isn't it. What happened, did you have a few who didn't allow you to boast of your indepth knowledge and analysis of the ecomomic impotentence of the Average Joe like me? You presume much. I happen to very aware of the present economic situation our country faces, and of the ecomomic history of many civilizations. Techurs r not al ungifted and beloe the median curvature. I and others like me who teach despite the sick put-downs of pundits like you do so because we can. And, guess what? I intentionally give me GOD-given talents away instead churning of brokerage accounts and stealing from lunkheads like the other CPA's I used to work with. Oh, did you not ever stop to think maybe some teachers might have studied the art of money like you? Leave teachers alone. I personally have steered and at times even helped finance the college education of several hundred young Americans who otherwise now would be one of the leeches you so disdainfully dislike instead of being able help support this great nation.
Your're a selfish, sad little UnMan.
You grow up too. Yes, he is lucky I don't teach his children, because I work at the same inner-city, violence-plagued school I graduated from. If he has kids, they wouldn't like it. Fortunately, I served in the US Army and discovered what real government-mental dysfunction is like by touring the world and watching people actually starving. How about you? You ever serve anyone besides yourself. |

I live in Australia, I earn half what you do, and interest rates here are at an 11 year high, yet I'm paying my house off in 5 years. I don't think 'America' is your problem.
You need to look at all your expenses. Do you have credit card or other personal debt? Pay it off. Get a second job. Get rid of pay television, and switch from broadband internet to cheaper dial up. There are hundreds of things you can do to save money. Always buy groceries in bulk at factory outlets when you can, as this will cut your bills dramatically. Always make your lunch at home and take it to work with you. This saves me between $700 and $1000 a year. You can freeze sandwiches and curries and pastas and take them to work with you. It saves a fortune.
I think you need to look at your spending and your debt burden. It's not the country's fault that you're not meeting your obligations. You earn enough to meet your obligations, so you need to look at reducing your debt and expense burdens.
If you're renting, try to rent somewhere cheaper. If you've got a mortgage, get a boarder to contribute to the expenses. This will save you money for a slight inconvenience.
There are heaps of things you can do to improve your situation. Go to the library and get out some books on personal finance. They are full of great advice.
Best wishes |

You must have a load of bills. I make half of that and I'm about to go to McDonald's right now.
It is a bit curious how everything and how it's priced is directly tied to gas.
We basically unzipped our fly for allowing ourselves to both depend so much on imported oil as well as link every aspect of the commercial world to the use of it.
Brazil knows how to run a country, at least as far as oil is concerned. It's always good to be as independant and to think ahead as much as possible. |

many prices are going up making it harder all the time but if you can not afford to eat. try setting your budget by priorty not due date. food and shelter first then pay bills |

Big business sending all the jobs to places like China. February 2008 63,000 manufacturing jobs lost in America. Where do you think they went. China needs oil to manufacture nearly 75 % of the worlds goods so the Chinese government will pay top dollar for oil and private companies need to out bid them so oil sky rockets and the cost of doing business in America sky rockets and your $50,000.00 now buys $10,000. worth of goods instead of $40,000.00 . I became disabled 2 years ago and I'm trying to get by on $1,700.00 a month. |

You don't say where in America you live or how many are living off that 50k a year so some of the answers above me have been a little harsh. $50k a year doesn't go far where I live. Prices are out of control. |

There are many people who live on less then 50,000 annually, and I am sure it must be tricky, but here is how they do it. First write down each day what to the penny you spend of things. I mean everything. At the end of each day check your list. Do this for a month and then sit down and turn of the TV and discuss with you spouse and children where and for what you spent your money. If there is anything you spent money on that you feel you needed or wanted LESS then food, then the next month do spend it. Buy food instead. In the short run it all boils down to, you make only so much money, and some things must be bought, others you want to buy and still others you can't afford. |

Isn't it horrible. We are a family of 6. Our income is well over $80,000 and we can't afford to buy food either. Let alone clothes or other necessities!! It's becoming a sad world we live in!! When a gallon of milk costs more than a gallon of gas!! SHEESH!! |

As you can see your question has fallen on the deaf ear.
I presume you are talking $50K before taxes. Well when you calculate you will find out the you pay more than half on income taxes and variety of hidden taxes, feeding the nonproductive and parasitical segment of our society. Government being the largest employer in the country with ever increasing administration of people who are also non-productive and useless, national debt is at near $9 trillion dollars and can't be repaid anymore.
So, if you have 4 members in the family you also owe your government 4 x $28,000.00 and that family of six making $80K is in the hole for over $100 grand. The teacher above had lost his calculator so he is also in for a rude awakening when he will be asked to pay his share of 5 x $28 grand. With his attitude of a happy and satisfied victim, I am sure he will send an extra dollar to pay for more arms as shown in the clip. Ignorance is a bliss and consider it a bonus that he is not teaching your kids.
$300 million of your tax dollars went down the drain right here, as presented by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-North Dakota:
http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/307.html
Lola D on the other hand will blame it on China and oil. Maybe she should get her facts straighten out by watching this oil crisis clip: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3340274697167011147&q=non+oil+crisis&ei=0tdGSL-yGJmSigL21vnRDA&hl=eN
The question is NOT what the hell is going on in America, the question is, are you willing to do something about it or will you just sit there being victimized as America grows in numbers of gullible people who teach your, not my kids? |

Yes, the problem is what's wrong with America! The answer is that America Sucks! A lot of deniers on this board. As always defending the realities of American life. The usa is one of the most unequal countries on earth. People seem to forget that it IS America. "land of the free", sure, whatever... In America you should not have to horde food or be frugal to the point of poverty. They in their answers, confirm even in their suggestions that you are to blame. They confirm that America has concluded. Unlike you they cant see it because they are blind to Americas shortcomings. They are the ones who say that America is a 'great country' but are stepping over masses of homeless in the streets. They just cant see it. I have never believe in America. I hate this place and everything it stands for. I am trying to leave. Do some research and you will see that you now have to pay for that too! Try to renounce and see what they say! They like to pass all kinds of laws when no one is looking. And to think that I thought slavery ended! |
