All above answers, as you can plainly see, are diverse and imaginative.
You sound like you are a young person, so the best advice I could give is to tell you that a Chinese proverb says... A journey of a hundred miles begins with the first step.
If you take the wrong step forward, or go in the wrong direction, you will lose.
Certainly it appears some big corporations offer good investing through their stocks, and many pay dividends.
However, as mentioned, things look very gloomy right now, so the best thing to do is make sure you place that sum in a savings type account, and even though it will earn very little interest, it will be safe.
The next step would be to open an account with a discount broker, and slowly buy into some stocks.
I mean...very slowly...like about $300.00 per month.
Once you have accumulated about six or twelve different stocks which pay dividends, you are on a good path toward making that sum of money grow.
I could suggest real estate, but this is very dicey now and has to be given a lot more time to pan out.
Many properties are not selling today, and many are dropping drastically in price...and still don't seem like a bargain.
Location factors, timing...this hasn't happened since the early 1990's, and this cycle has yet to see bottom, so beware real estate for now, but keep thinking about one day buying a piece of quality property.
Good luck. |

Would need more info about you and your current financial situation.
However, I will give general advice.
Your first option should be to fund fully a retirement account.
If you have done this, or you wish to wait on the retirement fund, then one of the best things you can do is open a DRIP Plan.
They are seldom talked about because brokers make very little money when they suggest them. Yet, they have proven to be one of the best, if not the best, long-term strategy on Wall Street.
The best part is you get solid annual returns from well-known, safe Blue Chip companies like: McDonalds, General Electric, Pfizer, Walmart, US Bancorp.......etc........
They are inexpensive to start and maintain, and your dividends are reinvested for free.
They are perfect for small investors, as well as big investors. They are safe and allow you to not care about whether the market is going up or down. |

You better stash it and sit on it, as long as a year while you see how the job goes! And read that contract in detail! |

Save some, pay off school loans, other loans or debts. Talk to a financial advisor for advice. It's not a LOT of money but it can make a dent in your debt to help your credit. |

Figure out what you need for immediate important expenses. Then 'pay yourself' by putting it somewhere you cannot touch it
-namely in an investment vehicle that you can earn some decent interest without the risk of spending it. |
