I got $70 worth of NSF charges from my bank for $12.00!!! overdraw...?
How do I get the money back from my bank????

chicpower
You can't. It's the banks policy and is fairly standard. If the overdraw was your fault then you have no recourse. Sorry man. You're actually really REALLY lucky it was only $70!!!! I've known several people who had a small overdraw/overdraft like yours but bounced so many checks they wound up paying hundreds in overdraft fees. You might want to check with your bank to see if they have an overdraft protection plan you qualify for. My bank automatically takes out a small loan of up to $500 if I accidentally overdraft. I pay no overdraft fees but the loan is subject to finance charges if I don't pay it right away. It doesn't count against me though and doesn't harm my credit with the bank. I only bounced a check one time and since I had been with my bank for 6 years at that point and was in good standing the erased the charges that one time. If you've been with your bank for a while and have never bounced anything they may be willing to remove the charges as a one-time favor. Definetly check on overdraft protection though.

I had this happen to me once, a couple months ago. I called the bank, and since it was my first time doing this, they took the NSF fees away. Is this your first time overdrawing?

If you're a good customer and you go in and talk to them, they might remove those charges. Has happenend to me, but we live in a small town.

I'm sure the charges are defined in the banking agreement you signed when you opened up the account so you're pretty much out of luck. But if you have been a good customer for years with them, you can try calling their 1-800 number and speak to a rep to have them reverse the charges....that is if you have sufficient funds in your account by now. I've had late fees for credit card payments to my bank reversed because I've been a customer with them for over 10 years. If they don't reverse the charges then you can just say you want to close your account and you'll take your business to X bank instead. They hate to lose a customer to a rival so you can try using that as a last resort if they won't help you out this one time. Just be prepared to close your account if they call your bluff. =)

Oh one more thing. Some banks have free overdraft protection. So if you write checks that your checking account can't cover, it will pull from this account. Of course, you have to pay this account back ASAP because it's like a loan and it's charged at a pretty high rate. It's only for emergency purposes and to avoid those ridiculous NSF fees.

you can't.It is their policy.
Be careful they are allowed to "collect" your debits any way they want.
Lets say you take out 7 small amounts, three days later you over draft 1 large amount. They are allowed to process the larger amount first, then the 7 smaller amounts, and over draft fees on all 7.

You can call them up or stop by the branch to see if there is any way they'd be able to waive all or any of the charges this one time, as a courtesy...! They may, or may not! good luck...

pjbthree
That is for two overdrafts. If this is the first time you did this, the branch manager has discretion to reverse all or part of it. But you meed to ask nicely.

Momo
Some banks will give you the benefit of the doubt on your "first" overdraw, anything after that they will charge you a nice fee for every check thereafter.

If this is the first time this has happened in the previous 6 months, then they can refund the NSF charges, but only if you ask for it. If you've had this type of refund in the past 6 months, then they can refund up to 15% of the total charges.

you cant get it back the bank paid the 12.00 dollars and then they charge you a bunch of fees because they covered it.

You don't get the money back from your bank. Keep an eye on your balance and don't spend more money than you have in the bank.

Slim Whitman
You don't. You just paid stupid tax.

Don't spend money if you don't have it. Get on a plan, put money aside to cover emergencies,

Budgeting ends overdrafts.

We budget each dime on paper, and put CASH in envelopes for certain categories, such as groceries, dining out, clothing, if there is no money in the envelope we don't spend .

We save for items.

Get control of your spending. (look into Financial Peace University) find a class in your area and sign up. It WILL change your financial life if you follow the recommendations in class.

ryanjkirk14@sbcglobal.net
you can't get it back. Thats how the banks make their money. I had like 50$ worth of charges after i overdrew $4.12

ED Lolington
That sounds about right, you don't get it back.

LKaye
You can't. The best thing to do is change banks.
