Let PayPal know exactly what you told us and report your "friend" to the police. You'll probably need a police report to dispute this claim. |

The best case solution for you right now is to file a complain of identity theft with your local police department. Contact the three BIG credit reporting companies (Experian, Transunion, and....grrrr...it escapes me right now!) and put a 'freeze' on your ssn account. It will cost you money to release the freeze to secure a loan or cc in your own name, but you save thousands in the long run when it comes to car / home / personal loans.
Call your "roomie" out -- this isn't cool. You didn't incur this debt! It's not your responsibility to pay it off.
If you wanna be really nice, you can give your roommate a week or two to pay it IN FULL, but I (personally) wouldn't!
Good luck! |

I would STRONGLY SUGGEST(in the highest terms) that
if your former friend refuses to do anything about this
file a complaint with your local law enforcement agency.
Since, your former friend used your name, address,
and used your identity to rack up a $300.oo
bill, etc. Any amount over fraudulent bill not made in
your name over $50.oo($300.oo on your case) is a
felony. And also using your name to commit such fraud
is a Federal Offense. Also, falls under mail fraud, etc.
I am sure having him arrested for this for causing
you financial troubles will make him think twice. He might
try to make a settlement with you, however I suggest you
get him convicted to spend time in prison. This
way you can have any debt problems he cause by
filing a claim on any assets he has.
And also contact your bank telling them about this
particular matter(more likely they can get you in contact
to the right agencies on this) and also they may try not to
have your credit ratings messed up.
Also, contact your local Better Business Bureau about this
as well.
Again file a complaint with your local police department
and have him arrested.
That is my best advice to you.

What is your problem

I read further. Call the police and get a lawyer. contact the company and make a formal complaint. get a copy of your credit report and make sure he didn't open any credit cards in your name. |

Tell your roommate that's fine, you're going to complete a police report...then do it. Straight up, call the police NONemergency number (from information) and ask about a police report for identity theft ... and advise them that the offender confessed to you.
Then pull your credit report and dispute this with all three - tell them it's identity theft by your roommate. |

Take them to small claims court. You may also consider doing a credit check.
There are plenty of businesses out there that will monitor your credit and let you know if any other accounts have been opened in your name. |

you need to talk to your roommate and have him take care of the payment and close out the account and make it clear that if he refuses you're going to have to take him to court. And then you STOP conversing and living with this person. They are obviously a slimeball liar. |

Call them and ask to be put through to the Fraud Department. It IS fraud and they should take it seriously. If they don't seem to be much help, write them a letter and give them a timeframe in which to respond and help you - this generally encourages companies to hurry up and get back to you. Make it clear that you don't actually have an account but that there is an issue of identity fraud. What a terrible thing your friend did! |

If you call paypal they will not help you if you dont have all the info. I have tried for account I did open myself, they want all kinds of info to prove you are who you say you are. Also, if it went to a collector most likely they have your SSN and will report to the credit bureaus. First you need to pull your credit report from all 3 agencies, www.annualcreditreport.com (its free), and make sure your roommate didnt open other accounts with your info. I would contact a lawyer who can help with identity theft cases. |

it's probably some sort of error in their network. |

Hmm, that sounds pretty blatantly illegal to me. Here's what I'd do:
1. Have (and somehow record) a conversation about this with him. Get him to basically admit guilt. Demand that he closes the account and pays it off and shows you proof that he's done so.
2. If he is even remotely uncooperative, take the recording and the letter to the police and ask them to charge him with fraud or something. |

Contact PayPal and report an identity theft and offer your cooperation in resolving. Just do not pay for something not yours.
As for your roommate, I don't know. Police maybe? Small claims case? |

Make sure the collections letter is real. There should be contact information included in the letter. Then take a baseball bat up the side of your roommate's head, remove his wallet and use it to pay the account (providing it's real).
If the account is real and it is in arrears, PayPal would have axed the account long ago. |

Kick the crap out of him, what are you a sissy?
If he won't help, call them and see how legit it sounds. Don't give them any personal information though (especially your social security number!) There should be an account number on the letter they can reference.
Also, check your credit report and get this deal cleaned up before it effects your credit. Contact both parents (yours and his) if your roomate doesn't help you clean up this mess. If no luck, contact the authorities for Identity Theft. |

Tell your roommate, you will go to the police and file identity theft charges against him if he does not pay within one week. If he doesn't pay (make sure he gives you a check/money order payable to pay pal). If he does not pay, call the police and file an identity theft report. Contact pay pal and tell them (after you get your police report) about what happened.
Then, take your former friend/roommate to court for $300. |
