I have $20,000. Should I pay off our cars or get that inground pool I have dreamed about for years or save it?

I own an inground pool and let me tell I have figured out if you dont have the money to pay someone to take care of it DON"T get it. Its nice and all but i spend so much time taking care of it that its not funny. I would definitely go for the car payments and if you like to swim you can use those cars to take you to were there is a pool so you can swim. Anyways you electricity bill will skyrocket allong with your water bill when you get a pool. (But if you have some extra cash you can use to pay someone to take care of your pool daily go for the pool but other wise stick with the car payments.)

I recommend paying off those cars. With the money you save from not have a car payment you can save up for a pool and pay it with cash, or invest it in something that will give you a return on your money.

Pay off the cars first. The interest on the car loans is an expense you can avoid. With what is left over (if anything is left over) save it for a while. You don't need an inground pool right now, but if you invest your money, in a few years you'll have enough for the pool. Then you can buy the pool, if you still really want it.

In this shaky market and economic times, i would go with actually saving your money for a few years till we pul out of this rocky situation. But if you sure your job is sucure i would go with the paying off the car, b/c takes away one bill. the pool will just add more bill. yearly maintence of a pool is a lot of work, and in the summer months maintenence must be profored every 2-3 days. with adding clorine, checking the PH, skimming the crap off top and bottom, and every few weeks you need to back wash the dirty water from the filter. But if you sit home alot then a nice pool is a nice addition,

Don't get the pool. First of all, a pool costs way more than $20,000. You never get the full value out of it when you sell the house and it is expensive and time consuming to maintain.
I would say pay off your cars, but then you are already making those payments. If you weren't making those payments would you put the equivalent into savings? Probably not. So keep the payments so you don't waste the money you would have if you didn't have the payments. (I hope you understood that). I would definitely save the money, but you sound like you have a hole in your pocket and want to spend, so if you are going to spend, pay off one of your cars. (the one with the higher interest rate). With the money you normally pay on your car, you could join a gym or ymca with a pool! lol Good luck, and research the pool thing. My brother bought an inground pool and it was $80,000. Even 1/2 price is way more than you are talking about. Pools are very expensive. Good luck.

Pay off your debts then you can have free cash to start saving for your pool.

Save it. It gives you peace of mind.

Unless the pool would significantly improve the value of your property (well over what you spend on the pool) your best bet would probably be to pay off your cars. You could then save the money that you would be paying each month on the loans.

Think of it this way: If you owned a paid-off car, would you take out a loan against those cars to build the pool?

It's the same thing, because in either case, you're having to choose between:
1) A paid off car, but no pool
2) A pool, and car loans.

There are some factors to your situaiton that are unclear. Such as do you have another savings fund with money set aside for an emergancy fund? You should have 3 months worth of living expenses set aside in case of dire circumstances. Also, is the amount left on your car loans so much that it would use up most of your $20,000, and do you plan on keeping these cars for a long time? Finally, what is the percentage rate on those loans, and what are you earning on your savings right now? The different rates on these two items could vary the benefits of doing one or the other. These things, among other potential factors, should play into your thinking.
At face value however, I would say that you could put a decent portion of your savings towards your car loans and invest the rest. But if you are due to pay off your cars within a year or two anyway, then I say look into the pool as an investment, especially if you are not likely to stay in this house for longer than five years. These statements are just opinion based and are not made as a direct recommendation because of the gray areas I stated above.
I wish you luck, and I hope that you realize that there are many factors that can play into your decision. Please consider everything carefully, as you are seemingly in a good situation right now.

Okay this is how I would look at it, you can make your car notes without a problem hence you have saved 20,000.00 and buy paying them off they only last for so long before you have to buy another one and they loose there values of a course of time so to me that is throwing away your monies, so I would go with the in ground pool, it will add valve to your home and it is a great form of entertainment and family fun and great exercise, with gas prices getting so high it is harder and harder to go anywheres to enjoy your selves so why not keep it all at home. I would go with the pool. I hope that this may have helped you. Blessings!!!
