Maybe I could point out that most checking accounts do not pay any interest. You might want to consider moving that money into a money market account or perhaps laddering some CDs. You would not have to look too hard to find 5% rates for that kind of money.

In other words you could be gaining $15,000 a year just by moving that money into the right interest bearing account. I would be happy with just taking a 10% cut of the first years interest gains (pre tax of course) as my fee for this consulting.

I would tell you that you could be making at least 4.5% interest in a simple savings account like ING Direct, Washington Mutual or any number of banks (you would need to be sure that your deposits do not exceed the maximum amounts to keep them FDIC insured). No risk at all in that. I would set that all up for you and then you could leave just enough in your checking account (or a money market checking account where you would get interest on your balance), to cover your monthly bills. That's a lot of money so if you are working, just having that in the bank would provide a tidy sum each month over and above what you already earn. Then you would be able to take that interest each month if you wanted to or leave it so that it could realize the 'miracle of compound interest'. In return, maybe you would want to give me a little reward for being nice enough to help you protect yourself financially.

Randall, why not write the $250,000 check to a charity and have them put it in a pooled income fund. You get a tax deduction for the contribution, they will pay you an annuity based on income generated by the investments in the fund periodically, AND you've given money that will grow for the charity and benefit them for years to come.

Help yourself, help others... sweet!

P.S. You can wirte ME a check for $250 for the advice... lol

I'd present you with my plan to start a scholarship fund for people who need help for college. But instead of the typical "if you have a child at 16 and make no money we'll pay for anything you want" My rules would be that you not have children. That you are currently in a full-time job, and that makes it difficult for you to take time off or spend extra money toward school. But you cannot have any convictions or DUI.. it gets detailed...but basically you have to be a good person that has a hard time making ends meet dispite not getting in trouble when you were younger.

I would tell you to save your money and buy a house.

I would ask first of all if you would like me to pay it back, what kind of terms would you expect? My husband and I have been working for near 5 years to better our financial situation. We both had bad divorces, and have been looking for a loan. $250k is too much to borrow. We wouldn't be that greedy. As far as trusting us to pay back, if you want to help us we have placed an ad with the website prosper.com. Our link is below. You would receive the money back + interest. You can become a lender and place a bid on our loan. Even if you don't really intend to write anyone a check, the thought was very nice. Not many people would even think of helping someone out. It's really sad that our society has to come to a point where helping your fellow man is last on anyones check list unless it benefits you. Like I said the thought was nice, and a dream come true for people like us. If the whole amount was given to us, we would pay off everything we owe, donate some to charity, and invest, invest, invest. Thanks for a question that got me thinking!

I could really use the money, you could send it to me. I am 25 years old and dying to move out of my house and become independent. I would also be able to finish school and go out and get a better job so I can support myself. The extra money will go to charities that have a significant impact on helping to improve society.
I know you aren't really going to give out money and its okay if you aren't but it would be nice to have a little push start in life.

I would tell you to invest that money in my new business idea. Maybe you should contact me because if you did do that then you would get 25% of the business.

i'm in huge trouble and owe a lot of money for something i've made a mistake for. 100k would sure help me out of a mess. i would pay you back, but it would take some time. this is honest and i really need the help. i want to make things right with people, but need to give a lump sum up front.

I would tell you the darned truth. My ex husband had a secret apt. and he also cleaned out our bank C.D's. Since we split up a year ago I have been trying to hold onto my house without going into foreclosure! I could just really use that money to pay off my mortgage!!! I would somehow pay that forward.....
