I have a department store credit card that I don't use any more. Should I cancel it to improve my credit score
I have a credit card for Mervyn's with a zero balance. Mervyn's doesn't have stores in my state anymore, so I couldn't use it even if I wanted to. My question is would it be better for my credit rating to just leave it alone with a zero balance? Or should I cancel it?

As long as the account doesn't have an annual fee I suggest you leave it alone. You don't want to reduce your available credit limit and its also harmful to your credit by closing old accounts because it makes the length of time you have been using credit appear shorter.

cycler123
Why do you want a credit score? A credit score is nothing more than an " I love debit score". I am trying to get mine to ZERO.
Pay in cash! Get rid of them all!

You will have better credit if you keep it because you have unused credit which looks good to creditors. Plus if you cancel it, it cancels your credit history with that card.

Close it. Even if your score takes a minor hit, it will rebound qujickly. Why have an account that you don't use. It's an opportunity to have problems.

Something to consider. Store credit cards tend to close inactive accounts after a certain period. Is this account even showing on your credit report?

To improve your credit score you do not have to cancel your credit card , in contrary...you have to use it , a lot, but..you have to pay it regularly , religiously to the day , that will give you a A1 credit record , people with no credit card have trouble to get credit..... Be strong , purchase with your card & but pay it at the end of the month, It's interests FREE..........

call and request that they close the account. make sure they send you something in writing.

Don't cancel, if it is in good standing that would just take away a good credit reference. IN a perfect world you could use it only 1x every two months and pay off in full. This would show a record of active credit, paying your bills on time, and an available line of credit (the unused credit portion). These are the fast track to building credit.

Cancel it.
Definitely!

kokopelli
Cancelling it will NOT improve your credit score, and may in fact hurt it by reducing your total available credit.

What you might want to do is to write to them and ask them for a credit line increase.

cancelling will not improve your credit score. However cancelling it will help if you are looking for more credit. The reason is that if you have to many open accounts like credit cards then companies can deny any request because you might be a risk with the access to all possible debt.

Cancel it! If you have to much available credit, it can hurt your score; especially since this is an idle account. Call and close the account and ask for a written confirmation of this transaction.
