hhhh | I have a shopping addiction. I can't go into a store without buying something! Help!!? |
Whenever I go into a store, I almost always buy something even if I don't really need it. Mostly clothes. I have money in my bank account now, but I'm going to have to start paying grad school tuition and start renting an apartment, etc. I'm afraid it might become a huge problem. How do I get over this???? |

If you have credit cards, cut them up and throw them out. Withdraw all the money from your checking account. When you get paid, put your money in envelopes labeled for what that much money is going toward....we have rent, vet, groceries, gas, electric, etc. SEAL THEM, and don't open them until you have to pay the bill. Get a money order instead. It's less than $1 at the post office, if the order is under $1,000 I think.
Put whatever money you have after bills into a SAVINGS account, so you can't write a check or charge to debit.
If you don't have the will power to do that, then every time you go somewhere and buy unnecessary CRAP (mostly clothes), take them home and put them in your closet with the tags ON. Then when the weekend rolls around, you can go back and embarass yourself returning everything you've bought that week, and when they ask if it was defective, you simply say, "No, I can't really afford it, but I have a shopping problem." After you've humbled yourself a few times, you might break that nasty habit.
If you have someone you trust (probably not wise), you can always hand your money over to be delegated to you where it's needed. But I only say that because I make sure I have $500 IN HAND before my other half goes back to work every Tuesday. He's worse than you could EVER be, believe me. |

Make a list of what you need. Get someone else to shop for you, or find the exact thing you need in the store without looking here and there.

Maybe you should take more time doing a hobby that you enjoy rather than shopping. Go for a walk, watch a movie, play sports or something. Anything that will help take your mind off the fact should help. If you don't have the time to go to the stores than you can't spend... |

Any addiction can become a huge problem in time! My best advice would be (from experience with this addiction) 1.DON'T GO INTO ANY STORES without a list of essential items. 2.Be disciplined now, for if you wait, it will only get more difficult. 3. Pray that God would help you...because He will!!!!! If He helped me, He will help anyone!!!! |

The best way to beat this addiction is to get caught shoplifting. The lesson you will learn is that material things aren't worth nearly as much as your freedom. It kinda puts things into perspective. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not condoning shoplifting. I am simply saying that if it were to happen to you, your urge to buy everything in sight would be somewhat diminished. Thanks. |

Leave your money at home, or take very little with you so you won't have access to it when your out. |

Don't take much money with you when you go. Don't go often. That's what I have to do. |

Stop taking your wallet, card, checks or cash with you. If you have to buy something take only what you will need for those few items plus $5. It will make you cut back and trust me once you are gone you will not be willing to go all the way back to the store to buy that useless item. |

You are not alone. The best advise I can give, is leave your credit cards at home locked in a safe. Plan your shopping. Make a list of things you need and stick to it. It is not easy going from impulse to needs based buying.
We are all suckered into impulse buying with all the marketing and advertising. Again, think of needs rather than wants.
I heard the Jone's neighbors went bankrupt.... Forget about your neighbors and focus on your future. |

Take your credit cards put them in a zip lock bag then put them in the freezer. Voila that's the end of IMPULSE SHOPPING unless you have the cash on you. If you see something you like you'll have to go home and take your credit cards out of the freezer and wait for them to thaw out which will give you time to think about whether you really need another top, pair of pants, shoes, those earrings, that purse.
The other thing you can do is to grow up and become more mature and responsible. You know you have tuition and rent etc. to pay why haven't you saved money to pay these things? Do you really want to go to school and get an education so you can get a better paying job in the future or is having those really cute pants you saw in the store today more important? |
