Call Suze Orman. She has a portion of her show called "Can I Afford It?"

Ask her.

Don't waste our time.

If you earned 130,000 a year then you should have the smarts to answer this question yourself.

If you REALLY made $130,000 a year you would be smart enough to know how to manage your money and answer this question yourself. I think I hear mommy calling...its time to take out the garbage and brush your teeth before bed

People who buy $110,000 cars don't finance them. They pay cash.

As the saying goes: If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

florida_accountants
THE ANSWER IS NO,,, YOU CAN NOT AFFORD THE CAR, BECAUSE YOUR MOM WILL KILL YOU FOR DOING THAT, LOOK ITS NICE TO DAYDREAM, BUT GET REAL,,, PUT DOWN THE CRACK PIPE AND JUST SAY NO!!!

THE BEST RULE IN LIFE IS: IF YOU HAVE TO ASK HOW MUCH THAT MEANS YOU CAN NOT AFFORD IT.

TURN THE TV OFF, AND WITH THE CLAPPER TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF, HOPE YOUR LUCH IS READY FOR TOMORROW AND IS IN YOUR LUNCH BOX, DONT FORGET TO TAKE A FRUIT AND A JUICE, REMEMBER NO JUCK FOOD AND MUST HAVE A BALANCED MEAL TO KEEP YOUR MIND SHARP AND YOUR BODY FROM BECOMING OBESE!!!!!

GOODNIGHT KID, SLEEP TIGHT AND DONT LET THE BED BUGS BITE!

Sorry, not believable.

Um, find out how much the car payment will be each month and then just figure out if you have enough money coming in each month to make the payment.....

I take it from your question that you're not a rocket scientist?

NO. Cars ALWAYS go down in value. The total value of ALL your cars should not be more than 50% of your annual income.

u need to make yourself a yearly budget, setting aside your assests and liabilities, your savings and your entertainment expenditure, and figure out if its worth it to get it right now or wait a while and buy a cheaper car until u save enough money for this one.

gunguy918
At one time a long time ago, it was common advice that a car payment not exceed 25% of your annual income. Good idea. It is nice to have an expensive car, but with the economy going the way it is, I would advise against it. Buy a less expensive car and put the difference in your own account. Then if the economy worsens you will not be cornered trying to pay for it.

My knee jerk reaction:

No.

First off, I'm assuming you made 130,000 gross. Without taxes.

Which means you owe the government half.

So now you have 65,000.

You probably also want a nice place to live, which may cost you $1500 a month or $18,000 a year.

Now you have $47,000

You also need good food and good clothes, maybe even a little entertainment: there's another $10,000 - $15,000 depending on your tastes (kd and wal-mart or steak and armani?)

So now you're down to $37,000 and we haven't even talked about gas for the car or maintenance. Or property taxes. Or utility bills. Or life insurance. Or emergency funds. Or retirement savings.

Now, don't get me wrong: I think people who work for their money should be able to spend it as they see fit, but that's only after they have taken care of all their other responsibilities.

Basically I think that if you're responsible with your money, you can be irresponsible with what money you have left.
For more you can check out this blog post I made that sums up that philosophy:
http://www.btgblog.net/2008/05/ben-and-jerrys.html

So if, after looking at the honest to god truthful numbers of what you can afford (which only you know) and then decide you can afford a 110,000 car, by all means, buy it.

But if you can't, don't kid yourself. If you can't, don't.
