I have just sold an item on ebay;. Paying funds into account - is this a good idea?
Let me explain. The buyer has offered to put funds straight into an account rather than send me a cheque. I've never done this before. It sounds sensible. Is it ok to do this - give out account number etc. Please advise urgently. (sensible answers only pls)

I'm puzzled by all the alarmist comments. Tranfering funds to someone's bank account is a perfectly legitimate option - and much easier and cheaper than sending a cheque. Your bank account number is not secret information - after all it appears on every cheque you write. If you are still in doubt (and who wouldn't be after all those folk saying "don't do it") ring your bank and ask them what they think. Personally I use Paypal as do most ebayers.

Dreamcatcher
No , get a paypal account and give them your email address and pay that way or have them pay with a credit card. Never give anyone your account number. So many people are out there ready to scam anyone. This person may not be one of them but I think you rather be safe then sorry.

Tell them you want a check or money order. I would not give out personal account information. Paypal is another option.

Jessie D.
Don't ever EVER give out ur account number no matter how reasonable it sounds..... this person could ruin your life with that kind of information. Have them use PayPal, that is the safest way!

A.Mercer
Yeah, I would not do that. A lot of scams exist where a person gives out their bank account number so that the scammer can supposedly put money into the account but what happens is that the scammer empties the account. This could be one of them.

Tell them you want a money order or a cashier's check. Allow a couple of weeks for it to clear before you send them the merchendise. That means wait two weeks. Don't just watch the account and see that the money is in your account. There is sometimes a difference when money makes it into your account and when the check clears. Some people get soaked because they assumed the check was good because the money made it into their accounts. What happened was that the bank took a bit of time to figure out it was a bad check but they are required by law to put the money in your account after a specific amount of time. They give you the money, then find out the check is bad, and now they take the money back. Meanwhile, you have already sent the merchendise. Watch out for that scam as well.

As mentioned before Paypal is another way to go. It will give you faster access to the money and gives you a lot more protection. Worth the fees if you ask me.

Never give out any account info that is your personal account. I always use paypal when paying for items or receiving money for items that I have sold.

sounds like it could be dodgy the safest way to do this is using paypal this way money is paid into your account direct from him to you and the buyer wont find out your bank details.

chachafance

NEVER give out personal information, especially a bank account number. paypal is much safer. they send money to your paypal account and then YOU can transfer that to you bank account. if you open a paypal account make sure you sign up for the FREE one otherwise paypal will take "a piece of the action".

ferrisob1
NO Never.

Definately not a good idea.

Use paypal or postal order,

John S
Paypal is ther norm, but it also has its problems (lost funds etc).

Why not just use the special delivery service at your post office. Your buyer puts his money in a sealed envelope, then into a "Special Delivery" sealed plastic envelope, pays like £2.00 for 24-48 hour delivery (or next day before 9am if you pref) and you get the package insured in transit.

Nice and simple, and its all nice cash - no cheques!

No, no, no. Do not do this. There r a lot of cheats wanting to do this they then get your bank account details etc. Only accept paypal, or if they dont have an account, say u will accept postal order or cheque but u will not be able to send the goods out until it has cleared. Good luck.

don't give out yoru account number. Set up a paypal account, it is easy to do and funds will go directly into there. From there it is free for YOU to transfer to your bank account. THere is a small fee to use paypal, but worth it. You get the money quickly and know its safe. I've bought and sold a ton of items on ebay and use paypal for all transactions.

evilpuffin
use paypal, if it all goes wrong u can get a refund for up to one month

ulster scooby
NO NO NO THIS IS A SCAM ONLY ACCEPT CHEQUES OR POSTALORDERS

naz18hg
Yes it's ok...its not like your giving personal information away.
