This depends on the bank. There are some which will restrict you to as low as £2000 and some that require to be given up to 30 days notice.

Either they will put this in their small print in the conditions which you signed when opening the account (which I can also guarantee that you didn't read); or they will quote anti-money laundering laws at you; or they will say that they don't keep that much money in the branch; or they may say that they have to arrange this through a security company.

Essentially, they want to keep your money for as long as possible and earn interest on it, whilst at the same time not paying you interest on credit balances.

The only way to find out is to check with your bank. You will need some form of identification with you when you pick up the money and make sure that the signature on your passport is the same as on the bank's system (very often it is not, because there is only the small box on the passport form for this).

Good luck and don't forget the 1% commission for the advice.

Yes, it's your money you can do what you like with it, it doesn't belong to them so they can't tell you what to do

Yes of course. If you want it in cash though you'll need to call them the day before to make sure they have it ready counted and in the denominations you want.

If you're in the USA there won't be any problems if you accept a Cashier's Check. However, if you plan to take it in cash, there will be questions for you and some forms to sign. I'm not sure of the amount of cash you can take without filling out papers, but a few years ago I took out $10 thousand in cash. From the questions I was asked, you would have thought I was laundering money or a drug runner. They really try to make you feel guilty with their questions. I still don't know if it was bank policy or a nosy cashier.

Mummy 2B DEC 10th !
umm you will need to phone them and check as they will need to get the money sorted or transfur it to a different account for you

You'll have to give them a few days notice and you might not be able to do it from a small branch. Go and see them.

When you get it sorted, it's your round.

davy t
Of course they will, but why not leave £1 in and keep the account open?

Sure. But, I used to be a bank teller and most likely they will not be able to give it to you in cash. But, that would just be stupid anyway. Just bring your proper ID and ask for an official bank check when you withdraw the money. If the bank tellers do not know you they may be a little cautious so I recommend that you bring more than one form of ID.

*Sigh* £16,000......

k3kat
Yes they will you will need to give them a few days notice and they usually ask for a form of id too.

LouLou
You will need to make an appointment with the bank and let them know how much you want, they need notice, the will probably ask you want you need if for.

Ed W
Yep, the phone call, give them half a day. Walk in and check out. A big city bank will have it right there. The issue is counting, it will be needed to be counted at least twice by two different tellers and then once in front of you.
