First Direct.
You can do almost everything over the net, and you can still use NatWest,HSBC and all Link cash machines for free. Its also good for international use.
I use mine heavily for a lot of non-standard banking, and they have never let me down. |

Avoid Lloyds TSB as they are rubbish |

not barclays...
Try nationwide, I like them best as their interest rates are higher and they let you withdraw for free abroad!
But for an unbiased opinion why not try http://www.uswitch.com and look at their current account comparison! |

The Halifax..... though I do suggest getting a small overdraft for "just in case", as all UK banks charge bloody ridiculous £28 fines for going even 1p overdrawn.... which is then usually followed up by them hitting you with a 2nd £28 fine because their first fine put you overdrawn again (and may go on until they've screwed you out of nearly £260 like NatWest did a couple of years ago!).
This is the account I currently use:
http://www.halifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/currentaccount.asp
For more info on UK bank check this out:

Royal Bank of Scotland, they are the best. They will even make you a cup of tea as you fill out the forms. |

Not NatWest - they have horrible charges, horrible customer service and they allowed a company to withdraw money without my consent, from the account I had with them.
I will never bank with them again!!!
Barclays are OK for a highstreet bank, but if you want an online bank with a great interest rate go with 'smile.co.uk'. They are a part of the Co-operative bank, so they are ethical with your money too. |

I'm with lol, Lloyds are good for us. We have personal and business/charity accounts with them. We've had accounts with Barclays, Abbey, etc. but prefer Lloyds. Their online services are easy to use as well.
The only hitch might be if your deposit is not in Sterling. They said it might take a few months to clear a € cheque we deposited in early July. |

Avoid Lloyds tsb they have rubbish interest rates and constantly try to charge you money for things.
Does it have to be a bank as building societies tend to offer better rates and benefits. Nationwide is pretty good. |

What if you open a cash card and a internet bank? This way you can take advantage of the high interest rate of about 5.4% and with cash card no interest nor tax to use if want to buy stuff on the internet.
I have halifax but I think Abbeys (Abbey National) have a higher interest rate with online internet bank |

HSBC-honestly they are brilliant, you can have a current acount where you dont have to use an overdraft. they give you a card to use in stores and online and a cheque book if you want one. do online banking free safe and easily- visit www.hsbc.co.uk for application forms etc
hope this helps |
