In the uk there is a crime called theft by finding you are supposed to hand it in to the police and wait a month or 2 after which it becomes yours if not claimed.
It depends where you found it if you would be on cctv or not but I would be tempted to keep quiet. |

good question
personal experience tells me to keep it - long story short...i found a guys wallet on a boat at a marina i worked at - i ran down the street just to catch the guy and give it back, then he accused me of taking money out of it (which i did not)
however, i would find out where it came from and give it back or contact the police - it could be dirty money |

Don't spend it... If you can find out who lost it, give it back... If not, hold on to it for now.
Just don't spend it! And don't mention to other people that you found it, because everyone will come to you claiming they lost $9,000....
By the way, I just lost $9,000! I think that's my money. |

for good measure donate half of it to a non profit organization, animal shelter, church, halfway house, anything, and for all your hard work go out and buy yourself something that will allow or help you to be a productive member of society. that way no one can say you're a bad person, right? |

Cash is the hardest to prove that it's someone's since there isn't really a way to prove its theirs. You may try to post an posting stating that you found a large sum of money in what city, and if someone tries to claim it, ask them how much money there was and ask them exactly where it was. otherwise, just keep it since there's not much you can do to find a rightful owner of cash. to feel less guity, you may want to contribute some of it to a charitable institution, which is a win win situation because not only are you helping out that institution, you're able to write off that amount on your federal income tax form (form 1040). you should also invest the money in a roth ira or mutual fund from fidelity or vanguard or something.. so good luck with everything. |

RIDICULOUS. Turn it in, ask for a receipt, ask for how long till it becomes yours if it goes unclaimed....do the right thing here, give the rightful owner a chance to come forward. you would want someone to do that if it were YOUR $.
They're not going to give it to anyone who comes in claiming 'I lost some $'. They'll need an amount and rough location befopre considering tunring it over to the 'owner'. |
