I just got a new checking account and my check numbers start at 1000, will it harm me in any way?
I have never had a checking account so I'm wondering if I should ask to change them or leave them like that?

i dont think that matters at all.

They do that on purpose because it makes you look more established than a low number would. Merchants like to see some kind of history and stability when they take a check, so most people don't start off with something like 0001. You're fine.

leave them like that. some businesses will not accept a check if the numbers are very low. it will signify to them that you have a new account and some people do not want to take the chance of you not knowing what you are doing and will not accept it. the higher the number usually means that you have been writing checks for a while.

no, actually that is good in a way.

It is better than starting with check #1 as #1 shows it is a brand new account and it is possible someone might not accept your check because the account is new.

It must be a great feeling to get your first checking account. Try to develop good habits by recording all of your checks and keeping track of the balance.

As long as your personal information is PRE PRINTED on the checks and not starter checks then you are fine. All usually start at that since it is the beginning.

cyanne2ak
No, that won't harm you at all. Don't change them.

Mrs.S
You should definitely not have them change it. Most financial institutions start their new checking accounts off with check #101. Some merchants are a little hesitant to accept a consumer's check if they have a low number. Having a higher number shows merchants that you have used checks in the past wisely. Don't dispute it!

No.

They do this because many merchants do NOT want to take a low numbered check....shows that the account is new and bigger chance the check will bounce. What are you afraid of?????

It will not affect you at all, it will just give you larger check numbers.

Leave it, it is better to have a higher ck #, some places will not take checks under a certain #. (that was about 5 yrs ago) it still may happen!

I thought they always started you at 1000!

penpallermel
I don't think you have anything to worry about. It just might be the way that your bank starts people with their first checks, rather than start at 0. The numbers are for your reference, so when you check your statement you know what checks are credited to your account.

The reason for the checks starting a 1000 is because at most large chain stores and grocery stores, They will not accept any checks that are below 100 or 300 I forget right now. So it will only help you to start writing checks without any hassle or stores refusing to accept your check.
