I just sent almost $5,000 to pay off my Discover card. If I cut it up, am I no longer a costomer?
Should I call them to make sure it went through and the card is completely paid off?

I'm so proud! No dept :D

Okay, my credit score is 732...isn't that good enough? Would it be okay to close it?

Deliah
Cut the card if you like but if it is a good credit rating then DO NOT close the account. In fact use it for gas every few months and pay it off immediately to keep it active.

One more time if it is a good rating DO NOT CLOSE THE ACCOUNT! YOu need 3 good trade references for future credi needs.

leslie is right!

Good for you!! Congrats on being debt free also. No, you have to call then to closed the account, and it will stay on your credit report for 7 years. BUT wait, do NOT close that account, because it will negatively effect your credit score. It is wise to just cut the credit card, and keep the account open, but do monitor your account closely and make sure no one else is using it. Good luck!!

p.s. it is a good idea to make sure they received the payment, and there is no residual interest accrual on this account a month or two later.

Stupid Flanders
You are still technically a customer unless you actually call and cancel the card.
Be careful on this, however. If you were always in good standing with discover (paid your bills on time), canceling a card can actually lower your credit score.

If you are still establishing credit, I would keep it open even if you don't use it. Once you have a strong credit history, then you can cancel it.

Please listen to Leslie, Torrie, and me if you are in good standing. These other people telling you to cancel now are either too young or inexperienced to know.
Congrats, by the way.

EDIT - 732 is pretty good, but it still could be better. I would keep it open and just not use it...especially if you were never late on a payment with that card. You might find that your score would go down if you cancel it. Positive credit history = higher credit score potential. Canceling the card takes away the positive credit history for that card.

that hot chick
Good for you but no, just because you cut up your card only means you no longer have a card . You still have an account with discover, and could ask to have a card sent out anytime. If your wishing to close the account you'll need to call them and ask to have your account closed that way.

That's awesome! Contgrats on becoming debt free.

You may not want to actually cut it up for a couple reasons:
- if it is your only credt card you wil need it for some things, such as reserving a hotel room, rental car, and online purchases

- if you are good with paying off your CC you can take advantage rewards, such as cash back programs

There are a few more good reasons you can read from this article: Don't Cut up Your Credit Card http://www.i-endeavors.com/2007/10/03/dont-cut-up-your-credit-cards/

Oh, also if you've had the card for a while, a history of credit is actually good for your credit score, so keep your older cards and close the newer ones.

Congrats again. Now take the money you were using to pay your CC balance and invest it, and you're on the road to great wealth.

Paying it off only makes you a good customer. Canceling the account will take you off the list and only that will. You will probably have to send a registered letter to them, return receipt requested and be ready for the barrage of "Please stay with us." letters and e-mails.

You are no longer a customer when you pay your full balance AND instruct Discover to close the account. "Cutting up the card" does NOT close the account.

wentstyga
you should call them and close ur account, just because your payed off doesnt mean ur no lonner a customer. You have to specify thaT YOU NO LONGER WISH TO BE A CUSTOMER. gOOD LUCK AND THAT GOOD U CUT IT UP THAT WAY YOU WONT GET TEMPEETO USE IT.YAY 4 U.

Sharon F
Cutting up the card doesnt close the account. YOu need to call Discover and tell the rep that you want to close that account....

Yes you should contact the creditor to verify that your payment was received.

You have to call customer service and have them close your account and be sure they send you a "zero balance" statement. (ask for one by name just and keep it with your other financial records in case your account ever comes up as a credit issue in the future) Be forewarned, they will try every trick in the book to get you to remain a customer, special offers, lower rates, etc. Be firm and stick to your guns.

Benjamin R
call them and cancel the card after all debt is paid. Then you can cut it up.

B U S Y
No, you have to call them and tell them to CLOSE your account. Best thing to do is run a free credit report and find all your open credit cards and call all of them and close them. Just because you paid it off does not mean it wont show up on your credit.

Doug J
you still have an account with them, but if the card is cut up, you can't use it. Your balance will stay at zero. Eventually they will call you to find out why you no longer use the card, and try to give you a deal to start again with a new card. Unless you specifically tell them to close the account.

You need to ask them to close your account. Ask for a confirmation letter.

Bob A
You need to put it in writing.

you need to contact them and tell them that you no longer would like to be customer no longer.

suzanne g
Discover won't know you cut up your card. To them, you're still a customer. You need to write to them to close your account, and get something in writing from them saying your account is closed. Just call customer service & ask them how to go about it.

ABSOLUTELY! Paying it down to zero does not close the card, it just give it a zero balance.
