returnofvambo | I just threw someone's cheque away, what should I have done with it? |
It's a bit late now really, I've ripped it up. A £30 cheque from the DVLA with someone else's name, but my address printed on it. I'm the only person who's ever lived at this address, I moved in when they built it, so.... What would you have done with it? |
|

Q
|
Why don't you ring the DVLA or e-mail them and tell them there was a mistake. I bet they just punched in the wrong postcode or house number and their computers fill in the rest of the address?
You never know, someone might be using your address!!
It's best to tell them. |

sent it back to DVLA |

you should have double checked it. |

Cheques only have a finite lifespan - it wasn't made out to you personally, so you coudn't benefit from it. The person for whom it was written either doesn't know about it, in which case its tough, or they do know about a refund, in which case they'll call the DVLA and ask!
When the DVLA realise that they've got the wrong arrdess, they will adjust their records accordingly. In any event, they are acting outside the Data Protection Act in that they have failed to maintain adequate records! |

you should have lit it, and used the flame to light a candle. Sat in front of the flickering flame and meditated on the loss of £30...and know the next cheque coming through the letterbox will be £3,000 just for you...
:) :0 :D |

sent it back. but if you can still remember the name on the check then its not too late to ring up and tell them that they made a mistake. if not, the person it was meant for will probably call them in a few days anyway and ask where it has got to and get a new one so don't worry too much. |

I would have sent it back to DVLA so that they would know that there is an error in with an address in there payroll department. |

just like the Elvis son "return to sender" |

Returned it to the DVLA, with a short note of explanation, anyway it can retrieved? |

You should not even have opened the envelope if it wasn't addressed to you. Interfering with the Royal Mail is an offence. You should have sent it back unopened marked 'not known at this address'. Think of the poor person who is waiting for this money. |

You should have sent it back to the DVLA they obviously made a mistake - best thing you can do is give them a ring and let them know what's happened so they can send another cheque to the correct person/adress |

returned it to DVLA? it didn't have your name on it so it would be void to you. |

Well, I certainly would not have told everyone about it! |

You should've either called the person who wrote the check...or you could have written "VOID" across the face of the check and mailed it back with a note explaining what you said ^above.
Too late to worry about it now, though! Once they see that the check hasn't been cashed after months pass or they get contacted by whoever really was owed the $30, they'll realize the check was 'lost.' |
