I left the UK 6 years ago owing the bank £20k, what will happen if I try and open an account now?
I have had no communication with any UK bank since then. I am also in the same postion with the student loans company.
Additional Details
The debt is largely a graduate loan, some overdraft and a credit card. I left not to run away but because I got a job in in Europe and couldn't at first afford any of the repayments. The lady at the bank said to me "ok, call me when you can start the repayments again", I never called. According to Experian, credit scores are only kept for 6 years, I don't know when that 6 years begins. They told me that after 6 years you simply start again(assuming I had closed everything and not owed a penny i guess). And yes, I ran a normal bank account at my new residence and still do, I have an excellant credit rating and was approved for a mortgage some time ago. I am now back in the UK, getting paid into a separate account but paying tax etc like normal.
Now I could do with an account here for convenience sake, and to build up some credit so I can get a mortgage this year. Still of the same opinions?

To be honest, you will not be able to open an account with any bank, as you will have been black listed and also on their system as a non payer.

are you gunna open an account in this country or other??

You probably owe the bastards about 2 million quid by now

They wont forget the debt - get advice from the citizens advice bureau first before contacting any bank. Once you show up on the radar youll probably do one agan for another 6 years.

I hope they refuse you. Banks charge us more because you ran up huge debts and didn't pay them off.

Owing money and never returning it is technically stealing. Won't the US Embassy and immigration services get involved depending which country is your native? I know that banks have the right to seize assets or turn over your debt to a collections agency and onto an attorney, therefore resulting in the law and country's justice legal system in order to satisfy their debts and have the right to black list those attempting to open an account with outstanding balances unpaid. Also, as a bank, you have to realize that they are lenders or loan officers so interest will be highly involved. Even declaring yourself bankrupt now will not actually help you because you have surpassed a reasonable allotted amount of time to discuss your financial options. 20,000 currency in any European country is a high debt to pay off and you probably wouldn't want to even mingle with the banks. Try opening a US account instead or a foreign account and access your funds through an ATM that serves worldwide like Visa, Mastercard, or American Express and use traveler's checks or the card through participating ATM machines. This keeps you out of bad luck.

The six year term will serve on each single credit line you have so it won't all restart simultaneously and also you have to consider that if it is still outstanding past a six year mark, it will affect the next set of six years as a tally on your credit score because of the bureau reporting policies. Basically, the best thing to have done is paid the debt as soon as possible or consolidate everything so that you won't have as many negative credit marks.

Having a bad credit report will definitely be against you especially if you're trying to obtain a decent mortgage. I'd consider paying that debt off first before taking out any other loans or lines of credit, otherwise you'd be stacked high in rates not being able to get a lender than can offer you the best interest rates. Not only will you still owe money, you'll be throwing more of it out the window.

It's people like you and Icey push up the interest rates. Any unpaid debts will be charged interest at a phenominal rate - and you could be taken to court to get the money back - and they could take your belongings to pay. You should have gone to the bank and told them your circumstances - they may have understood. Any unpaid debts will remain on your credit file. You have to pick up the debt the moment you return to the UK. They will trace you down by other bills, electoral role and any other credit you may have. A warning of unpaid debt will show. To screw the country is to screw me - the tax payer. I assume you are a teacher if you have a loan by the Student Loan Company.

Icey - To pay full council tax and rent means that you are working. My brother is on the sick and has everything paid as his psychiatrist says he cannot work. I will have to pay both when I will sudy as I will remain in employment. To have student loan indicates full time studying, thus no money will be brought in. Thus he is studying his first degree. The governments does their best to support people doing a first degree, and not at a post graduate level. You should study Icey and get the same benefits - more if you have kids. You will be able to get a government grant that you don't have to repay. PS. You only pay one council tax per household not per person. If you are on your own, you will get 25% single person's allowance. As there are two - you will have to pay the full amount. You are the bread winner - you also get child benefits. You must have if you are not working, unless you have savings.
lusciousluxe is absolutely right.

Dunno, but could you get credit abroad OK?

I think they probably keep records for at least 7 years. It's a shame you didn't go bankrupt when you left. You'd be pretty much fine by now.

You'll most likely be able to open an account, however owing a bank is a mark against your credit score. Owing the bank might affect you if you try getting a house loan, or car loan, or credit card. My best advice would be to try and pay the bank back as soon as possible, then start on your student loans. Depending on how much your student loans are worth/how much you owe, you might be able to go through a consolidation company and have to just pay back the principle.

where r u now?
good on u!
everything in the uk is a rip off! my hubby is a full time student getting loan. i am a full time house wife looking after our three kids who are 4, 2 and a newborn and i have to pay council tax and he doesnt! how twisted is that. and he only gets £10,000 loan a year which we have to pay back. so why do i have to pay council tax and full rent?
if u can screw this country go for it!
if you come back declare yourslef bankrupt or something. what can they do??
this country gives u money from one side and takes DOUBLE from the other! its a god damn piss take!!!
and before anyone says anything, we're both british (born and bread in england)!
