slpnice | I lost $1,000 in my 401k in one month. My funds decreased my $20.00 per share. Should I bail? |

Common Sense

The $1000 you lost may have been due to a dividend distribution. Therefore... it wasn't a loss.
Buy a book or two that explains how Mutual Funds work and learn "asset allocation".
Even if you lost $1,000...... that's not a reason to bail.
Reasons to "bail" include;
Performance is not in the top 60% or more of similar funds. ie., If it's a Large Cap Growth Fund... how has it performed vs. other Large Cap Growth Funds? (over a 3 - 5 year period). MorningStar can help with this assesment.
Need to rebalance "asset allocation". |

No do not bail. Time is your best friend. If you stay with it things will get better. Selling low and buying high is not a good strategy. Pay no attention to what is happening month to month but year to year. Are you up over last year? If not perhaps you can do a little research and reallocate your funds. Remember you only realize your loss when you sell.Hang tight. You get rich slow with a 401K |

Absolutely not! Do not sell right now.
Ride the wave. Buy low....Sell high! |

It depends...
If you are young, then keep it in there - you will be able to purchase more shares at a lower amount and make more money in the long run when it goes back up.
If you are older, it may be a good idea to take it out and place it into a different account like a Roth IRA. |

Not sure. You need to look at the historical returns of the mutual fund you have invested in. Then you need to consider other factors such as fund objectives, the ecomomy, stock market trends etc. This is part of becoming an educated investor and it does take time. Also need to consider your tolerance to risk, i.e. high potential rewards also equates to high potential risk.
Hope this helps. You may want to take a look at other funds that are available in your 401K to see if there are better yeilds available. |

Buy more of the stock that dropped by $20 per share and keep buying it until the stock goes back to it s regular price. I am assuming that you have bought stock in a big company like Yahoo or GM or something like that. Big companies have their ups and downs but, over time, they bounce back (usually). So, if a $100 stock is selling for $80, grab it! |

Let's try a little "thought experiment"....
Say you were buying tins of food to save to eat after you retire, and you buy $25 worth a month....If the price of the tins goes down one month, should you buy more? Or less? Should you sell all the tins you already have saved up? Think about it, that would be "backwards", wouldn't it?
Look at your 401(k) balance once every six months or less, you'll be far happier with how it's doing!
Pretend it isn't even there, you'll be rich when you retire!
Happy New Year! |

No, do not bail. Mutual funds are for LONG TERM investing and you should not decide based on short-term market fluctuation. If the fund(s) you're invested in are solid, keep investing. When the funds are "down", you're effectively buying new shares on sale. |

Ask your stockbroker to explain your fund's poor performance, and assess whether it is still a fundamentally sound fund that will bounce back over time. If it isn't fundamentally sound, then you should cash out. On the other hand, if the fund remains fundamentally sound, then you should not be as quick to take a loss as you seem inclined to do.
Don't be afraid to seek second opinions with respect to the fundamental soundness of your fund. And remember to understand the pros and cons of any new fund you move your money into.
Good luck in 2008. |

First of all you are not providing enough info. What was the percent lost? Was it in a stock or mutual fund? When do you plan to retire?
All the above questions are important to determine if you should pull out. The stock market as a whole have returned 15%/ yr. Sectors like housing and financials have taken a hugh beating this year and it might go lower. If you are invested in these areas you might want to relocate some of the money to other areas like energy or technology. |

I use the 50% rule.
50% at risk in the stock market
50% in guaranteed savings, govt bonds, bank savings etc |

Are you diversified?
Some of my money is in stocks, but most of it is in an annuity.
I prefer the second, but at work I have the stock thing and seem to be doing great. |

Quite honestly, people of limited means should NOT be invested in the Stock Market because they also don't understand how the market works, so they panic easily.
I can't tell you what to do because I DON'T KNOW what is in your 401K portfolio and without knowing WHICH STOCKS are in th e portfolio, nobody can tell you what to do. |
