I m 18 years old and i m leaving home, how much money would i need to live on my own? like rents & expenses?
i am escaping from home and will not going to tell my parents where i went....plus i have a roomate and she is sort of in the same condition...how much do we have to make to live and study?

Wow.

Well you said "need" and if you stick to need it is probably about $500 a month. For the average person with a comfortable lifestyle more like $1000 a month. So plan for at least $800 a month.

Simply track of things you do for a month and give it a cost. Realize this will include things you may be doing for free such as laundry, eating, using paper towels, taking showers, etc... being independent of others means be solely depended on yourself!

Also, ask yourself if you're leaving money to enjoy life, go to college or cosmetology school, or whatever. You may have problems getting loans without a cosigner. Community College is normally less than $2000 per semester.

You're most likely moving out to make your life better and make sure you keep that in mind. Focus on that and your decisions will follow.

beautiful geek
working and studying will be difficult, but if you share the rent and bills you should be ok if you earn £800 or more between the two of you. (so long as you don't live in london)

p.s. best move i ever made, good luck X

oh please let your parents know what you are planning, they will be frantic with worry if you dont, just think about what you are doing, try and talk to them about what is bothering you,im sure they will understand.

spadezgurl22
it deoends on where u live to determine the rent in your area. you would need about 600 each monthly to survive and thats being cheap. if rent was 650 a month you would each need to pay 325. plus 100 bucks for utilities (electric & heat) so thats 50 each. 100-150 a month of groceries, 50 a month on cell phone. and the 75 would cover gas/transportation costs. good luck, surviving will be tough, so prepared. i woudl suggets getting a waitressing job bc u can make out good on tips. my sister makes about 200-300 a night waitressing at hard rock cafe, she has no problem surving, just manage ur money and pay your rentyon time, good luck! (plus moving in you will need 1st months rent and 1 month as security up front)

It really depends on where you're going to live, in some area rent is as cheap as 200 where i live(south florida) the cheapest rent is 1000
Then you have to eat at least 100 per 2 weeks depending on how much you eat, transportation, insurance, utilities, cell, fun, clothing.
Hopefully you have a good paying job

But I think its a bad idea, not telling you family where your going, your 18 you can leave if you want and still tell them where your going
You never know what might happen, its good to let people know where you are

Sorry, but it well and truly depends of where you live. The town I live near has private rent prices which are astronomical in comparison to the average earnings for the area, where as the city nearby is cheap as chips.

You'd need to look in local papers or websites for advertisments etc to give you an average idea.

guess what?
gosh dont make the stupid mistake you will regret it when your older......you dont know every thing about the world dont leave home

Look on rightmove.co.uk to see how much property is in your area.

Before you move do a budget, this is not far off mine:-

Rent £250-£300 pm
Electricity £40pm
Water £20pm
Council Tax £60pm
Food £80 pm
TV Liscence £10

Think about other stuff like travel, books, credit cards, loans, insurance (if you want it), entertainment/going out. How much do you ro do you want to spend on these.

You will also need to find a deposit which is normally 1 months rent.

You will need to set up house, this will include bedding, sofa, cutlery, kettle, curtains, toilet roll, plates, bread bin, pots and pans, an iron, cups, bin, toilet roll holder all those things you take for granted. They might be included in your house and they may not.

Also, your room mate, can you really live with her? Its one thing to be best mates but it takes a massive toll on a relationship to live with someone.

Can you really afford it?

Avoid credit cards like a plague and this will fook you up later in life.

Well, I think it depends what city and/or state you live in.
Where I live, rent for an apartment can be anything from $400 a month to $1,000 a month. TO rent a house is more, but house or apt, you can have a room mate and split the rent. To rent a room can $300 a month to $800 a month. Then there's your groceries- you will need at least $100 a week.
Let's not forget personal wants and needs- you might need
$500 to 700 a month, no matter how seldom you shop for such things. If you drive, I suggest $400 a month. I only refuel my car, twice a month, but I don't go out, often. MOvie tickets could be 8.50 or more each. To rent a video, once you join Block Buster or Hollywood Video is perhaps $1 to $5 a time. If you save some money monthly, have a job and a bank account, this shouldn't be too much of burden or problem, long as you're careful. To live on one's own is fun, at least half the time. One more thing- it's probably $6 to 12 a week to do your own laundry (4 quarters per washing machine load and 4 quarters per dryer load. Plus some loads might need more drying time. ). And to ride the bus could be $1 a ride. That's the way it is where I live (Thank God, I have my own car!) but when I used to take the bus,I was always worried about being late to whereever I had to go. I hate being late and really hate waiting for the bus and worrying about pssibly being late. I don't know if you're the same way, or not. But if you have a licence to drive but no car of your own, save some money for one.

Wow, if you ask that get ready for shock treatment. A lot depends on the City the larger the more money. Midwest is less than both Coastal Areas. If in the Midwest and willing to share a place with another person you could get by with an income of 26,000 per year if you are not a money waster.
On the coast add 10,000 and hope you can make it.

I will tell you what you really need, a JOB, and if it is a low paying job you will both have to have a job, and then you will just make ends meet.

Mr Happy
As you have not worked out were your going to live. How much its going to cost your not ready to leave home yet.Theres still a lot of growing up to do.Sorry if you were ready to leave you would not have to ask would you

Rad
rent-approx 2-300 per month each
your mobile bill
shopping approx 20 pounds per week
your socialising money
transport
TV lisence (forget how much it is)
council tax is about 50 pounds a month (as you may get a student discount
then theres gas water and electricity

IF YOU'RE 18YRS OLD AND HAVE TO ASK THAT QUESTION--YOU SURELY DON'T NEED TO BE LEAVING HOME ON YOUR OWN. YOU ARE HEADING FOR THE BIGGEST "FALL" OF YOUR LIFE AT THIS POINT. JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE 18 DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO LEAVE. TOUGH IT OUT UNTIL YOU HAVE THE FINANCES SAVED TO GO OUT ON YOUR OWN. I PROMISE, YOU WILL BE REGRETTING IT MUCH SOONER THAN YOU THINK. USE A LITTLE COMMON SENSE INSTEAD OF THINKING OF YOUR "BIG ADVENTURE". YOU ARE HEADING FOR BIG TROUBLE!!!!!

Sammi, I have left home several times, the first time age 21. It's something you need to plan properly or you could end up very unhappy. I'm 34 and now living in a shared house about 20 miles from my folks. A while back I tried living more than 200 miles away and was very homesick, struggling financially and seeing next to nothing of my nephews. If you've just had a major row with your parents, cool off and really think about what you're doing. If you start having to put every penny you earn into rent and bills at this stage in your life, you'll miss out on the opportunity to do college courses, take driving lessons: all the extras that are so much easier to complete living at home. You will find the money just seeps away, because you're human and you can plan your budgets all you like but you're going to want stuff you haven't budgeted for.

If you do choose still to leave, don't go too far from home just yet. It'll be your first experience being away from your family and you'll miss them more than you think. Talk to your parents: you're 18 so can be quite open about your plans. It is your choice, your right to experience living by yourself so there is no need to do this secretly. Please consider as just running off will break your mother's heart. Are your parents really deserving of being treated that way?

It really depends on where you live. If you live down in Brighton in the UK (where I am) you’ll need a fair bit. Average rent for a 1 bedroom is around £500pm and a 2 bedroom around £650pm
You can eat for around £40pw
Electric and gas around £12pw
Council Tax starts at £1500pa
So just you’re basic living expenses will set you back around £196 per week or £849 per month for a one bedroom.
However if you share you’ll be able to split some costs, and save money on others etc.
Also those costs don’t include toiletries, TV licence, cleaning materials etc!!!

It depends on where you live, if you live in a low cost of living area, like I do in Dallas/Fort Worth, you'll need a minimum of $12.50/hr to be able to live with the minimum. Many people will probably disagree, but getting paid that will give you about $1600 month. Figure 25% of that for rent, which is 400. And allocate the rest for food, water, electricity, cable, cell phone, and savings. And you are barely able to make it. So if I were you I'd wait until completing your first two year of college before moving out. And try to be making at least $14.00/hr, that will give you a little more leeway on how much you have to pay for necessities. But despite the low cost of living where I live, you would need to be able to put a minimum of $650/month to find a decent place to live. But don't be in such a hurry to leave, I'm 21 and I still live at home, but I do plan to move out in about 6 months to a year.

hi, I'm 17 and I left home 8 months ago. Since then, I lived on like 300-400 a month in shared accomodation (in London) and I ate properly but didn't spend too much on clothing and stuff like that. So about 400 month is accurate. If you start working, doing about 20 hours a week may be enough and you can still be carry on studying (if you want to)?

Don't beleive the suckers who say you need 800 a month to live on your own, and it's not that HARD.

Hope you the best, be careful and have fun.
