I need help getting myself out of debt. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to do so?
I may or may not be the typical person in debt. I am single mom and have been supporting myself and my son on my own with no other parental support. I have lived the last three years off of my credit cards to provide food and clothes to my son and myself,I have overdrawn my bank account now three times. I know many of you may want to responsed that I made my bed and I should sleep in it. I fully intend to take the responsiblity to pay this debt off that I created, I am just wondering if anyone had and new or creative ideas as to how to do it. I do intend to go back to work, but it was really important to me to be a mom and this position has put me so far into debt that it is going to take years to get back out. Just in time to think about how am I going to pay for college. Anyway not looking for a violin or sad song just any advice or direction anyone has to offer someone who is looking for a way to be better.

Again not looking for save more and spend less. I decided to have a child when I was working. I decided to get a different job for a better life for us. I decided to use the credit cards to feed my child. I see that the only ways to take care of this is to claim bankruptcy or use the credit services. I simply was using an online service to see if there were any creative people out there with creative measures to pay off the debt.

Basically, pay all minimum payments, and attack the smallest debt with all available excess in your budget ... and move up the list.
You will pay a bit more than if you had lined up the debts by interest rate, but this method gives you momentum and keeps you making progress.

You will need to get on a budget and will most likely want to cut your expenses and/or increase your income.

go with the first poste--dave ramsey is awesome!!!!! it won't cost you a dime and it works. it's not easy--but definately worth the struggle in the end. his plan is basically--cut up the credit cards, cut off all necessities (cable, cell phone--don't NEED cell phone--i didn't have them growing up and i turned out ok :-). i'm sorry, but you acted VERY irresponsibly by living off credit cards, but you can clean it up. if you go with a debt consolidation or resolution--it's as bad on your credit as a bankruptcy so keep that in mind. the ethical thing to do, is start working and just paying your bills. and i agree-deadbeat dad needs to pay for his child. sue him for child support--don't let him get off easy.

Spock (rhp)
work first.

10% minimum toward your debts. see other threads in this line for details.

then get a better job that pays more -- put all the increased income into paying off your debts.

oh, yes -- the deadbeat dad needs to be coughing up to support his son. take him to court if he hasn't been doing so and get a court order.

Wow.

Here's the trick to saving money, live below your means, or don't spend more than you make. Try to make as much money as you can while being as thrifty as you can. The more money you save the quicker you can pay off your debts.

You do, however, deserve to get beat up from comments. After all you 1) had a child with no way for financially supporting them 2) you quit working to be stay at home mom which would be fine if someone else was able to financially support the household which you did not have and 3) you had nothing in savings and decided to live off of credit card debt over the past three years. Seriously, what were you thinking? The problem is you weren't thinking and now you are all of a sudden concerned about your financial status.

More than likely, I as well as others, are wasting our time here with sound advice. It is exremely rare that someone as irresposible as you are with money can just flip a switch and become someone that will settle up on their debts. Hopefully you can prove me wrong.

My suggestion will be that you start doing job and take debt loan. So by loan you can pay out the fees and the income you get from the job pay it for the interest. Don't think that in every debt consolidation loan you have to pay more interest. I am referring you one site its very good and takes very less interest.

Hope it will be helpful to you.

Firstly I take my hat off to you, for being a responsible person and knowing your responsibilities as parent, that alone and your attitude will get you some way towards fulfillment. But their is no quick magic solution, what you need here is a good regular income that can provide for you both. Then you can plan your debt solution, without a regular income, your nowhere.
Alternatively you could declare yourself Bankrupt, which carries it drawbacks, but maybe worthwhile. Time is not on your-side, only you can weigh up, the difference in time it will take to get out of debt, to going bankrupt and recovering in a short time, but also accepting the consequence's that go with it. But again first priority is a stable income.

Credit cards are a spiralling death.

Try to get them consolidated under a loan or one credit card wtih a lower interest rate. Normal credit card rates make it almost impossible to ever actually pay them off.

For college you can take out student loans, which have very low interest rates, and don't come due until after you graduate (at which time you can make 'interest only' payments if you can't afford the whole amount - or as long as you keep in touch with them, you can push the payments back indefinitely).

If you have other debt - such as doctor bills, never use a credit card to pay them - since when they bill you, they won't charge interest. If they ask you for a credit card, tell them you don't have one. Places that bill you, including collection agencies can't do anything to you as long as you are making a minimum payment, and even you if you skip, they usually can't charge a late fee, and again - with no interest, the amount you owe doesn't keep going up (or cancel out most of your payment). You can totally ignore some places while you are getting other ones taken care of. The worst thing they can do is threaten to sue you for the money, in which case you just set up payment arrangements, and stick to them.

Determine how much you can pay towards your debt each month. Pay as big a payment as you can afford on the smallest bill, while still making minimum/small payments on all the others. After a while, you will pay the small bill off - take the money you were using to pay it, and add it to the next smallest.

For example, if your smallest debt was $400, pay $50 a month for 8 months, while making minimum payments (say 20 bucks) on everything else. At the end of the 8 months, the $400 will be paid off, then start paying $70 on the next smallest until it is paid off, then pay $90 on the next one. It snowballs until all you have left is the biggest bills, and you are paying big payments on them.

If you don't already see if you can qualify for gov't assistance/welfare/childcare credits or even housing credits(section 8).. Seems like if you aren't working that you probably do...

In some/most instances the govt. will give you vouchers for childcare where you would have to pay $1 a week or something ridiculously low.

Can you maybe live with a friend/family member to ease the burden off your credit cards?

Apply for college grants through FASTWEB.com it's a free service that allows you to look for GRANTS.. That's $$$ that you don't have to pay back... You can find grants for almost EVERYTHING like being a mature student/single mother etc...

Can you collect child support? I would look into that !

Talk to a bank manager about your checking account they may work with you and reduce the fees.. *Speak with a bank manager and cry a little !

STOP paying on your credit cards and in time the credit card companies will want to settle...Generally, for far less then what you owe. You should if you can put some money in a savings account so that you have money to settle the account. Or you can go through a settlement services company like CNI or something of that nature where they handle the credit card companies directly and you pay them a monthly fee that goes into a secure account... They settle with the credit card companies NOT you...

Lastly- try FREECYCLE.ORG for gently used children's clothing/supplies.. You can even POST the things that he's outgrown for someone else to use.. It's a FREE service and everything posted on the site is FREE you just have to pick it up ! That will save you money on children's clothing/supplies.

You can also start shopping at thrift stores like GOODWILL, SALVATION ARMY- they don't take credit.. But they do have gently used goods at GREAT prices....

If you can sell some things that you don't need/use....

good luck

debt resolution center is an option so you can make one easier payment a month. Setting a budget for you and your family can help get rid of miscellaneous spending each month, only food shop on a budget and shop at second hand stores. Tell you bank that you want to turn off the ability to overdraft, it might a little embarrassing when you get turned down at the store but it will allow you to keep track of you spending and to not waste money with overdraft fees which is a huge waste of money. Call you credit card companies and discuss with a supervisor you situation and how you can work together to lower your debt such as lowering your interest rate. When you get a job have them automatically deduct 5% into an online savings account earning 4-5% interest apy so that when emergencies pop up you don't have to fall back on credit cards. Your kids should get financial aide to go to college they have their whole lifetimes to pay off their debt, you are becoming short on your income abilities as well as have retirment to think about so worry about getting yourself out of debt and saving money for your retirement over their college funds sorry to say. if they need to they can go to community college for the first two years and save a ton of money.

Have you considered calling a debt consolidation company?

You need to think in small steps. Get a job, call all the people you owe money, and set up payment arrangements. Even if it is only $20 a month, as long as you make SOME kind of payment, they can't sue you. If you continue to not make payments, they will sue. This is happening to my sister right now.

Are you talking about your son's college payments? You can apply for Federal Grants that can help with that.

The most important thing is to keep in contact with the places that you owe many. Proving that you have 'intent to pay' will save you.

If your main problem is credit card debt, you could look into the Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS). They are a legitimate non-profit agency that will work with your budget, and your creditors to try to lower interest rates. They don't promise to cut out any debt, but they show you how to use what you have to pay off current cc debts. Do a web search and contact your local office.
