Go to a bank and set up a savings account that you can only access over the counter, which will make it harder to access your money. Then go to your employer and ask them to deposit 10% of your income into that account. That way you will have less money to spend, and will have to spend it more wisely.
Make shopping lists, and don't shop on an empty stomach, because you will buy more. Also, always buy generic stuff. If you are a shopaholic, limit your trips to shops. Only shop once a week and give yourself a time limit. Set an alarm and leave when it goes off.
Buy stuff in bulk. If you plan a shopping trip and buy heaps of stuff in bulk, not only do you get better value for money on stuff you need (washing powder and toilet paper for instance) you also get that shopping bug out of your system.
When shopping, ask yourself "Do I really need that, or just want it?" Then walk out of the store. If you come back in an hour after thinking about it, then maybe you can justify the expense.
Set aside a portion of your income to spend on crap. Only about $20 though, because otherwise you'll be making things worse. Spend it when you want, and you'll be more likely to stay in control.

Open a savings account and put your money in it, don't keep much cash on you or make your credit cards handy. |

Just carry only little cash and one debit card that has a low balance. Dont get a credit card. Dont goto the mall or shop online. |

If you're a big spender, it's gonna be tough and take some time.
Slowly cut back on the spending and put the money into savings.
As the savings grows and accumulates it will encourage you to do more.
Good luck, hope this helps! |

Have your check direct deposited where a portion goes into savings. If you really have trouble, try an online savings account and don't get any checks or a debit card. You could still tap it, but it would be more difficult. |

Read Dave Ramsey's The Total Money Makeover. He outlines seven baby steps in which he teaches you how to make your money work for you!! It's about telling your money where to go.........not just letting it control you and you wondering where it all went....living paycheck to paycheck is a scary thing.
Check the book out, check his site out

You'll be glad you did!!

If your pay check is direct deposit have the bank automatically put so much in savings. Start with small amounts and when you see your savings grow you will probably want to increase it. It's a good feeling to have money in savings. |

First of all, if you don't have a job, get one. If your company has any kind of a savings plan, such as a 401K, put in the max allowable amount each month AND DON'T TAKE IT OUT TILL YOU RETIRE. Also, don't borrow against it.
If they don't have a savings plan, see if they have direct deposit. If they do, have your paycheck deposited directly into your savings or checking account. If it goes into checking, have your bank move a specified amount each week or month from checking into savings.
After a few months you will be surprised by how fast your savings will grow.
To stop spending, fill a large plastic glass with water almost to the top. Then put ALL your credit cards in the glass and place the glass in the freezer. Now, if you want to use your card, you will need to wait for the ice to thaw. This will give you time to change your mind and put the glass back in the freezer. |

The best way to save money is to invest small amounts at a time and get it out of your hungry hands.
Your first option should be to fund fully a retirement account. If you do this, and you have extra cash, then one of the best things you can do is open a DRIP Plan.
Go to : low-cost-stock-recommendations
.com
Click on the "DRIP's" Button on the Navigation Bar
These powerful investment plans are seldom talked about because brokers make very little money when they suggest them. Yet, they have proven to be one of the best, if not the best, long-term strategy on Wall Street.
They are perfect for small investors, as well as big investors. They are safe and allow you to not care about whether the market is going up or down. They are a must for any serious investor.
If you decide you are interested in DRIP Plans, click on the advertisement on the same page "$4 to purchase stocks". This will answer your next question, which is, How do I get started? and what is the least expensive way to get started?
I strongly recommend looking into it. They are great plans.
Good Luck |
