what's a lump of money? $100, $500, $1,000,000 ? work. move in with friends or relatives, and make a plan payment with the electricity company so you wont have to pay the full amount right away. look for van parts at a junk yard to save $$. Pray for a miracle that a good friend will GIVE you that money. |

Sell something. It's that simple. Detach yourself from a large material possession and go for it. Sell a big screen tv or a computer, stereo, etc. How about a lawn mower or tools that you don't often use? I wouldn't go the route of a pawn shop, but rather, advertise in the paper, or ebay/craigslist/bidz..something like that. |

Try visiting a check cashing store and get a advance payroll check. It's not great because you do lose a percentage of your next paycheck but if it's an emergency you can get the cash now. You will need a payroll stub to show how much you get paid and when.
If you don't have a job then I suggest working manual labor for a day's pay. You can call land scaping companies and they tend to hire day labor and pay by the hour at the end of the day. Roofers also tend to do that.

I would talk to the power company. Be up front and honest about your situation and let them know when you can start paying on it. They will usually work with you on stuff like that.
Maybe look to public transportation, if it's an option, to avoid the vehicle repair costs.
The only other way I can think of making fast cash is selling stuff on Craigslist.
If there was a non-loan source of quick and easy money, everyone would be there.
