Since you realize that continuing to use credit is counter productive, might I suggest a legitimate consumer credit counseling agency that can rip those interest rates from 20+% down to 6 or even 0%??? In 3-5 years you can be debt free and their services usually only require a "donation" per month which is still a lot less than you've been paying in interest. Access the "take the first step" link at the website below. These agencies are legitimate: |

You need to take an overall snapshot of what you are spending now-what you make-bills you pay-etc. Create a budget for yourself, and if for right now you can only make minimum, thats good as long as you aren't not paying! If at all possible, cut something out of your current budget, or take on an extra job where you can make an extra 50-100bucks to help get your ballance down. |

Cutting the cards up was a good start, and minimum payments are better than nothing. Now look at where your money goes. What do you spend your money on that you want, but don't need, that you can do without for a little while until you are out of debt? It is truly amazing how much money we waste without even realizing it. Good luck in your quest. |

Two ways to go. Find someone who will consoildate your bills( which means add them all together and you have one bill to pay, with what they charge.,or you can file bankruptcy and start all over. Good luck. Whatever you do, let this be a lesson. For the last 16 years, if I can't pay cash I don't need it.
I read the other answers after I read mine, you can do what they say, but you will only be paying off interest only each month if you pay the least you can. |

Its easy really. Make your normal repayments on the three cards. With the fourth and lowest card put a little extra towards it until its paid off. Then move up to the third lowest card and do this again until its paid off and repeat the process. My profile has more on this under debt and also a free shareware program. Check my sponsors to show your appreciation though. |

I am no professional but you should first call each company and see if you can lower the rate. You would be surprised how often they do that. If you have good credit they weill usually do that if you tell them you could go with a different card company for much less interest but you would like to negotiate with them because you would rather be their customer. I you have bad credit it is a little harder but they still may negotiate with you if you pay your bills and are willing to work with them.
After these first steps, it is important to reduce your bills. The best way to do that is to first stop charging. 2nd, pay the mimimum on all bills to keep the creditors away. 3rd. pay the additonal interest for the month on all bills.
4th, pay additional (whatever you can afford extra- even if it is only $5.00) on the highest interest bearing account each month until it is paid off.
5th, choose the next highest paying interest credit card and pay the mimium + months interest + as much as you can.
etc. until they are all paid off. |

Contact the creditors and see if you can negotiate a reduced interest rate by making higher payments. If you keep making minimum payments, it's guaranteed that you'll never dig yourself out. It's worth getting a part-time job to supplement your earnings in order to pay more. You could contact Consumer Credit Counseling (make sure not to talk to one of the for-profit credit counselors who will make money off you but may not help you at all). CCC will help you negotiate with your creditors and can help you walk the straight and narrow. |

Do not go to a consolidated credit counseling service they will kill your credit and it will show up like a bankruptcy on your credit report when you try to buy a home.
If you have been on time with your payments they should lower your rates to help out with the minimums.
You might need to find a temporary source of extra income- renting out a room in your home, or a second job till you get out of the hole.
Good luck! |

Get Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover.
It will walk you step-by-step thru the process.
Basically you pay off the smallest balance first. and when it's gone, you put all available $ on the next, etc.
Also you can call the credit card Co's and ask them to lower the interest rate. That can definitely happen.
Good luck. Hope that helps a little. |

I listen to Dave Ramsey. He has a radio show (you can download it for free from iTunes), and he has a get-out-of-debt plan called “Financial Peace University.” I recommend you get his book from the library and listen to his podcast. He recommends using the debt snowball. That is, paying the minimum payment on all of your bills, and then focusing intensely on paying them off one at a time, from the smallest balance to the largest balance. To get money to pay off your debt, sell stuff (anything you can) and spend less (eat beans-and rice, turn off the cable TV). You might even get a second job (like part-time pizza delivery). You will only have to live on this kind of “beans-and-rice” lifestyle for a little while. Hope that helps; good luck! |
