Yes, he is your son!

The Great Escape
Your legal obligation ended when he reached 19 so it is up to you what to contribute. Tell them have no obligation and whatever you give is out of your own generosity.

lil_kat_the_brat_girl
Legally I doubt you have to pay your son anything.

However, why would you not want to support your son through university?

You paid your ex money, not your son so why hold him responsible for that cash?

Unless you want more water under the bridge and another two years to go by without contact.......

the decision on a moral level is yours alone to make

telboy everton forever
he is 20 yrs old and doesn't talk to you tell him to go find a job and stand on his own 2 feet you have paid enough my friend

cheek_of_it_all
After the age of 18 years, you have no further legal requirement as he is under UK law an adult that has the legal responsibilit to stand on his own Two feet.

Franco
Your divorce and what you gave to your wife, has nothing to do with your son now.

As he is over 18 you have no legal obligation towards him. But if you can afford it, £50 per week is peanuts if it ensures your son's future and you should be ashamed for trying to get out of it. He is your flesh and blood, for haven's sake. What is money for?

If his mother can also afford to pay him something, so much the better.

I think as father that yopu should pay for your son education to help him get a good start in life and £50 a week is nothing that will not even cover his tution fees. You made the decision to bring a child into this world and you have to support the child and it does not matter whether you have a relationship with them.

snetterton
I don't think you have any obligation to pay towards his higher education. Tell him to get a student loan like everyone else. And, get yourself some legal advice quick!

lynn18050
He is your son, you shouldn't even be asking this question here. do your duty as a father.

is your name really michelle?

smiler
Sorry to say but hes your son and even though you havent spoken there must be an underlying reason for that.Just pay the money,If you could pay £500k in assests surely you can afford a measly £50 a week to help your own flesh and blood!!

get a lawyer and have them sort it out you could go round in circles on here!!
also hes over 18 and should be looking after himself!!

spanker
you're not good enough for him to talk to but good enough for him to sponge off. Relationships are a two way thing. Dont give him a penny until he grows up and talks to you.

PS im pretty sure you are not legally responsible after he reached nineteen.

Everona97
Where are you live? by low you are as a parent responsible for your child by different age in different places. Check that one out. £200 per month is not that much for a student. He could ask more, much more. Life is expensive and I am sure your expenses are higher than that. Why it did turn up this way for you - another story. But you definitely need to see someone or it will became a never ending story. Once you start to pay it will go for ever and look for increase every 6 months.

norn_06
Get his mum to pay it, she's loaded.

As he is now an adult, you legally don't have to pay him anything! You've paid £500k? Where has that gone?

I know people are saying he is your son and you should pay toward his education, but he has not spoken to you for 2 1/2 years! He should think himself fortunate.

I think he is being greedy, and there are plenty of children growing up without a penny from absent fathers. He needs to grow up and start paying his own way. How much longer is he expecting you to keep him? If he doesn't want to speak to you, and you dont mind forking out, you could always give him a lump sum to see him through college and that's thats. No more.
