Most overseas purchase offers are scams. Especially ones involving money orders and cashiers checks. The best way to spot a scammer is to ask them for their phone number. If they give you one and are able to talk to them - ask them where they reside, where they want to meet (make sure this is a super public location). Try to sell items locally. Be very careful of paypal as well, there have been the occassional paypal scam as well. Make sure you have some type of seller's insurance in place & shipping insurance if shipping overseas. Ebay is an awesome method if you can't sell it locally. |

Don't go for it! It's a scam theyre are hundreds of scammers operating on craigslist. They all run the money order scam. ONLY SELL LOCALLY! You will be responsible for the scam check when you cash it! Big trouble! |

Use common sense. Why would somone in Africa need to buy your coat. There are coats there. Is yours THAT special? If so, you should sell it for far more money.
Lots of people outside of the coutry are scammers. Be weary. Also, do not accept personal checks. Only cash forms of payment, such as paypal (which only useses and email address), money orders (which can me mailed to a neutral address, never use your own). There should be no need for an exchange of personal information if these methods (especially paypal, qhich also has insurance for the buyer) are used.
I've been doing ebay online for years and it's the safest way. All someone needs to use your name fruadulently is name and address (sometimes phone) it's surprising how easy it is. Be careful. If you're not sure, tell them you're not interested.
One more thing to watch out for is people who only email you because they want to have your email address when you respond. If there is no reason to respond, don't! Only if they are genuinly interested and you can tell that from their email. |

IT'S A RIP OFF!! RIP OFF! RIPPPP OFFFFF!
I sell stuff all the time on both ebay and craigslist and those people are the BANE OF MY EXISTENCE!!!
RIP
OFF!
The "money order" or "cashiers check" will be fake and by the time your bank gets that info (overseas $ takes longer to clear), you're out the coat, the money and...sometimes they even scam you by 'overpaying' and asking you to refund them the difference!
I got a guy in "France" right now trying to scam the mercedes I have online, for his "boss" who "wants to give it to his bride"...Yeah, right!...Here's what I do to those "people"...I tell them it is a mandatory FACE TO FACE transaction right in the ad. AND...as far as their emails, tell them you have forwarded their emails to the Department of Homeland Security and Interpol.
They'll leave you alone then.
LOSERS!!! |

Obviously a scam. Someone in Africa that wanted a leather jacket would go down the street and buy one. They definitely would not hire a third party to broker their leather jacket deal. I would send them a response that involved cursing and as many insults as possible. You likely will receive a form letter back from them indicating that they are ready to send the money, they will not read what you write. |

"their response is that the coat is going to their client in africa"
Aahh! This is a scam! Don't fall for it, and stop communicating with this "customer" immediately. You have no obligation to this person and have entered into no contract with them. If they continue to press you about it, just tell them "the coat is no longer for sale." You don't have to tell them it was sold, or you changed your mind, or anything like that. The coat is no longer for sale.
Think about it. Why would someone have a "client" in Africa that they want to send a random leather coat to? Doesn't that seem absurdly complicated? Aren't leather coats sold in Africa? Do people in other countries really hire middlemen to buy them clothing off Craigslist? I mean, globalization is one thing, but this is ridiculous. |

Yes be weary,, my friend is selling puppies and received a check for shipping and handling for 5K for a 500 dollar pup to go to england, and the check was a citi bank check but it was a fraud check,,, cops, fbi had to be called,

This sounds like a scam. Craigslist is primarily for individuals selling items in a local market. Ideally, your customer will come to your home to view and purchase the item. Or, you'll agree to meet in a mutual location.
I would simply tell them that you will not ship the coat. The item is for local pick-up only. |

Thi is a nigerian scam, never except money orders, and never send over seas to anyone, make sure in your Ebay post you say USA only, or which ever country you live in.
this is a Huge Nigerian scam going around, they always say there client wants the item,
Then they will try to send you a few dollars more then the actual item cost.
NEVER EVER EVER TRY TO DEAL WITH THEM> |

I would be leery too - Don't sell to this person - Why does someone in Africa need a leather jacket anyway? |

That is a scam, anyone who has said that to you is planning on scamming you. What they do is send you fake money orders or cashiers checks, and say that they will pay shipping through fedex or something like that, and you are left hanging, so when dealing with that, either go for paypal, or deal locally in cash, i would suggest. So please don't be fooled. |

If it sounds to good to be true it is.
You listening to your inner voice reasoning is way on cue!
Remember when dealing with foreign countries always ask for USA funds, not the foreign country! Could be a loss if foreign funding undermines the USA DOLLAR.
Go with a PayPal account! Accept no personal checks ever. Could be a stolen check or a counterfeit. You could accpet Western Union couldn't you? Look into that!
In the end cancel the transaction, start over with PayPal account. Put in your ad USA shipping only. |

How can they send a payment if you won't give your address? What do think they will do come to your house to steal your jacket. If you are that affraid, get a PO Box #. You should have had this all worked out BEFORE you advertised it on line! |

DONT DO IT!!!!!!
I had something like this happen to me on EBAY. It was an attemp at a scam!
Report it to craigs list.
Do they deal Pay Pal? That is the safest way to deal with $ on these sites, and you dont have to wait for a check to clear, or wonder if it will! |

Do NOT give any personal information...you should NEVER have to give out your information when your selling an item....I would simply tell them, they either want to buy it or not...dont give them all that....and if you do decide to sell to that person, dont ever meet them, ship it to them once they have paid for it...but it would be better to just sell it to someone you know....would be safer too! |

I would not even consider going forward with the transaction until you get money in your hand (including cashing a check before you send the jacket). I think this is HIGHLY suspiscious!!!! Please be careful! |

usually where you can sale things on the net there is a person in charge of handling complaints - much more, I would talk to them. The people eho bought the jacket tell them that you phone number is in the add. But they need you address in order to send you the check. |

Don't accept a personal check, only a bank check or cash or paypal. You will ship only to USA, so after they send you money you ship it to them locally, and if they want to send it on to the moon after that it is none of your concern. |
|

Amanda H

Don't accept a peresonal check. Just becuase you can "deposit" it, doesn't mean its good. The bank has up to ...21 days I think, and they can 'reverse' it and take the money back if the original check's bank does not honor it.
Believe it or not, counterfeit cashier's checks and moeny orders are the same way. You'd have to know its real. It would be better to do the paypal or credit card or something like that.
Name & Address of course they would need to mail you a check, silly! |

Stick to your guns!!! Open a post office box (very cheap) and tell them you must have the money upfront or no deal. Don't give them any personal information. |
