iLOVEjd | I want to pay off all my debt..? |
so it's the usual story, I went a bit crazy when I turned 18, contract phone, credit cards, store cards etc Then I lost my job and just stopped making payments. It's now 5 years on and i still havent cleared them off. I can't get credit anywhere because of my debt, that I estimate to only be about £2000. So I want to pay it all off, but I cant remember who I owe and how much,
how would I find this out?
If I pay it all off in the one go, how long will it take till I can get credit again? Additional Details I'd just like to add a couple of things...
It's my mother that has offered to give me the money to pay off my debts, and I will have to pay her back monthly. I realise I'm very lucky to have that help.
I moved house a fair bit, that's why I've lost control of all my debt history.
I recently tried to apply for student account with The RBS, even when I told the woman that there was no way id get it because of my credit rating. She then told me when I pay off my debts I had to go back, they'd give me a student account with an over draft right away? But some people are saying it's years till I can get credit again? |

Your credit is bad and if you pay them all off it will still be bad for i think 7 years but at least they will see that you paid it all off and im sure that will count towards something. To see who and what you owe just pull up your report. It will list everything for you. |

Hi,you can check at the county court as they might have
info on you.Once you pay off your debts you will have to
maybe run a catalogue & slowly build your credit rating up.Good Luck |

Being that it has been so long it should be reported on your credit report, and if so, order a copy and call each creditor on your report and tell them that you are calling to settle your debt with them. In most cases being that the debt is so old they probably exhausted their attempts on trying to collect the debt and has hired a outside agency/attorney to collect for them. The good thing about this process is they are more willing to accept a fraction of what you owe to settle the debt(commonly 0.25usd on the dollar). Good Luck! |

You say it is 5 years on and you estimate your debt to be £2000. Surely your creditors have been writing to you and asking for payments? I dont understand when you say you cant remember who you owe money to. You can get your credit report online for a small fee. Experian is an example. You will then see who you owe, and how much. You should then contact them to start making the payments. I doubt whether you will get further credit until all your debts are paid. Depending on your credit score you may in time be able to get a bank loan to pay off the debts. |

Go to experian.com and you can download a form, which you sign & send to them with £2 - they will send you your credit report which shows everything people think you owe them. You can't get this report for anyone else, it has to be your own and they check your signature is genuine. |

I highly recommend Martin Lewis' website if you are experiencing debt problems. He can give you a very good strategy for paying the right things off first. |

You can call a credit counselling service, they are free and will get all your debts together and generally you just make one payment a month.
The companies you owe will go along with this as they will be happy that an effort is being made to pay them off.
Then dont apply for any credit for 5 years, tough to do, but your score will go back up and you can start fresh. |

I would take advantage of your mom's help in this case, but it's time to "grow up" and take care of your own business. Once you pay off the debt you will recover fairly quickly, you may have low credit, slow pay history on your credit report, but at least it will show you payed it off and you should be fine, almost right away. Obviously, don't do this again!!! |

Hello,
(ANS) AHH! age and wisdom is a great thing!! OK, you definitely do need to find out or identify who your creditors are (that is the people who lent you the money in the first place).
**I would think that your bank might be able to search their account records if you have a rough idea who you might owe funds too?
**Another source would be one of the x3 major UK credit reference agancies, one of whom I know as Experian. They will have a personal credit history and should be able to help you identify who you took out credit with in the past, as well as being able to provide you with a copy for £2 or £3 of your credit history file (record).
**YES! paying off all your credit in one go is a highly desirable thing to do but be abit careful that you don't dig yourself into a deeper hole. Look very carefully before you agree to any debit consolidation schemes as many companies offer what initially sounds like a great deal. But which are NOT in reality as they will charge you a fee to clear your debits, IVA's (individual voluntary arrangements) are set up by such companies and will typically charge you any where between 10% to 20% of your total debit to do so, so its NOT a good deal.
NOTE: if you do want free help & advise please can I recommend to you the consumer credit counseling service. They are a national charity set up to specifically help individuals clear up or manage their debits and they do this free of charge. They do have a website which I'm sure a quick search via Yahoo or google would get you their details.
**If you clear your debits in one go then your credit score is (credit history) adjusted accordingly, this only takes a couple of days. Anyone who pays off their debits gains a better credit scoring number because this improves or reduces your risk level, i.e. making you more attractive to a future lender.
Ivan
many years debit free, & don't have a credit card, never use them!! |
