Wrighty - Gone For Good! | I want to save money, what tips have you got? |
I want to start saving about £40 per week into a good interest savings account as I'm hoping to build up a little fund of money to surprise my wife with something special. Would you say that this is a worthwhile thing to do? is £40 per week enough?
Thanks for your help,
Any other tips are greatly appreciated. |

ok depends how long your going to save for and what the total amount your hoping to save is?
but things like:
cut down on drinking, smoking, eating out, going out for work lunches ect..
petrol consumption, walk more often if you can
lavish purchases like aftershave, cologne ect save for xmas and bdays.
buy home brand things like shower gel, bath soak rather than the 'branded versions'
if you have any memberships like sky, mobile phone contract, gym ect.. consider cancelling if you dont get your monies worth, if you really miss them you can always rejoin once you reach your goal surprise for your wife.
dont buy too many designer clothes, wear the ones you have got more often
cut down on take aways
things like credit card bills you could try to consolidate onto a 0% interest free card....
another option is to get a credit card that offers 12 months 0% interest of purchases.. that way you can buy now and pay over 12 months interest free...
good luck |

I would buy premium bonds because you can cash these in at any time..in any post office. |

spend on what you need, not want you want. |

Certainly, you must not spend money where you can save it. Here is a great site that has some money saving tips: http://thinwallet.blogspot.com
If you do chose to invest your money, be sure that the interest to be earned is significant enough that it is worth your time. You also want the money to mature quickly, so the interest is an important factor.
Good luck and I hope your wife enjoys your gift! |

Saving money is always a good idea, no matter how small you can add each weak it still adds up after a while.
Me and my friends use a pub change pot, into which we empty the change from our pockets after a night out, that adds up a lot. |

£40/week - £2080 over a year, nice little present, but even with interest this won't grow massively.
It's difficult to suggest how you can save as you don't say what you are spending your money on.
Make sure any credit card balances are shifted to a 'balance transfer' card - that could save you £50/month on a balance of £3000.
Cut down on the beer/socialising (not cut it out) and try and 'shop around' for groceries. Don't just assume that your normal super market the cheapest. |

a few things
1: Do you have anything in mind you're saving to buy
2: Depends on how much you earn
3: Sounds like enough to me |

yes i think it's cute. that's only a a fiver a day. easily done
you can make lunch at home? which would save me about £40 a week.
or... use public transport. work it out though, as getting the underground is the same cost as driving in some cases.
if you are being really extreme you could try to save on your gas, electricity and water bills by doing simple things like taking showers, turning lights and electronic equipment off by the plug,
take out a personal loan to cover credit card bills which charge less interest.
buy cheaper food and clothes...
this site has a few good tips. but some of their ideas are a little outdated.

compare savings accounts here:
http://www.moneysupermarket.com/savings/
and look into premium bonds here:
http://www.nsandi.com/products/pb/index.jsp
this is only one company, so google premium bonds for more options |

Set your priorities ans don't overdo it in any aspect of your life. Also try depositing them in a bank so that they are not a temptation... |

I have started buying EVERYTHING on ebay. Yes, sometimes it's not much cheaper, but if you save a couple of pounds on one transaction, that can go towards your £40 a week saving.
Change your supermarket to a cheaper one, or ones with promotional prices, and buy economy. Good luck! |

If you get a wage increase and don't really need the money straight away get this amount transfered straight into a bank account. It will add up without you missing it too much. |
