I wanted to pay off my credit card in full. i paid what i thought was the balance owed but have now realised?
that i have paid over what was owing on my card, and that it is in fact over what my credit limit on the card actually was. this now leaves me £496 in credit with the card. the card is a vanquis visa. has anyone ever done this? will i be able to get the money back off them? i havnt cancelled the card or anything. will there be any consequences for this mistake? thanks in advance for any answers

write to them and ask for a refund.

send the letter recorded so they can't claim they haven't received it.

ask for it to be refunded from the source i.e. whatever means you paid it by.

follow up with a phone call if you haven't heard from them within say 7 days.

its your money - you have the right to ask for it back.

if any doubts or problems go to CAB and ask for advice - make sure you keep copies of payments/credit card statements etc as proof.

shouldn't be any consequences - they'll just get a bit of interest if they invest your money for however many days they have it :o)

I would just withdraw the money out of a cash machine with ya credit card. if ya know ya pin!

scrumpy
get a pin number and draw it in cash

katie30
the credit card company will not tell you you have overpaid Even if they are aware of it. but once you ring them and tell them and they check it out they will send you a cheque in the post. it happened with me. don't worry about it. ring them and ask for it back.

EDIT ok thumbs down. you obviously know more about my experience and life than i do. as a matter of fact they still kept taking the direct debit until i went to citizens advice. never mind. i am clearly wrong....i must have fu3kin dreamt it...lmfao!

Tammy
The best thing to do would be to ring the credit card company, explain what you have done and ask them to refund the money to you by cheque (check).

You will just have a credit balance on your card unless you use up the money on it. There will be no minimum payment to make. You could just take the money out on your card so that there would be a nil balance then cancel the card if you want to.

Contact them and ask them to refund the balance - they should be able to do this really quickly and with no fuss.
OR - just use the card up to that value!

dyno
You can either use the balance to purchase things or ring them up and ask them to pay it back simple as that

~Heather~
There won't be any "consequences". What are they going to do? Get on your case for giving them TOO MUCH money? You'll be fine. Just call them and tell them about the mistake you made, and ask them to refund it. I'm sure they will. And if not, you still have the money, it's just on the credit card.

NIC
be careful taking the money of at a machine like the ATM the CC company might still charge fees i've known them to do crazy things like that just ask them for a refund by phone

you can use the money or if your going abroad you can take cash money out without being charged an exchange rate

Mike A
NO, it's fine lots of people do that. You can take the money out of a bank machine just like your debt card. If you use the card overseas you won't be charged for the transaction like you would with your debit card.

If you leave it in there they will just use the funds to clear future transactions.

You're safe.
