MsSerenity | I will be getting some extra money for the next few months, should I save it or pay off my debt? |
I am going to be getting about 500 extra each month and want to know should i save this money since i have no savings or should i pay off my debt such as credit cards etc. I am able to make my payments on time and usually pay a bit more than the minimum already. |

I'd recommend you save a couple of months worth, and then use the rest to pay off debt.
This will give you a bit of an emergency fund, so if something comes up, like unexpected car repairs for example, you can pay for it without dipping further into your credit cards.
But once you've got that emergency fund, the rest should go straight towards paying off debt.
Look at it this way. If you use that money to pay off debt, you're earning a guaranteed interest rate on it. If your credit card has a 15% interest rate, paying it off is essentially earning you 15% since you would have had to pay that out in interest otherwise.
What could you put your savings in that would pay you as much as you could earn by paying off your debt? If you don't know of any investments that would pay as well, your debt is the best investment.
If you have several credit cards and other loans to pay off, the Debt Snowball Method is a very good way to do it. It can help you focus and you'll usually see faster results this way than anything else I've seen. |

You should of course always make all required payments on time, and holding onto some money to ensure that you can do that is wise. But in general if you have a plan that will pay all your must-pay payments, you then pay down the debt that has the highest cost of credit until you have no more debt, then go into setting up enough savings to carry you for at least 6 months should anything unexpected happen. You use this amount rather than leave credit cards with a balance at monthly due date.
Once you have a solid 6 months of necessary spending saved, start looking for higher interest or dividend paying investments. Don't cash out those investments to maintain your 6 month buffer when it drops to 4 months, but if that buffer gets low, sell investments to replenish it. Ordinarily we would hope that you can keep the buffer up to 6 months by sepnding less than you earn. |

Unless you love paying your interests to the bank each month, get rid of the debt. |

Pay off your debt - the longer you wait to pay it off, the more interest you'll have to pay! Oce you cover your debt you'll be free to save all you want. |

Just pay it off fully, so you don't have to worry about that anymore. Also, if you just pay the minimum payment you're going to have to pay more in interest. Just pay it off and then in months from now you will really be able to save that$500 or use it for whatever you want! |

I would pay your debut off first so that you don't have to worry about accumulating it and then I would save so that you can put more money into a savings account and won't have to worry about paying things off. |

pay your debts off. then, save the money you were spending on your debt payments. its a win-win.
always pay debt first as that is costing you money in interest. |

Pay off that debt!
A lot of financial experts recommend the following procedure. Let's say you have 3 sources of debt. Let's keep it easy and say 3 credit cards. The 1st card has the largest balance at $5,000. The second one has only $3,000 on it, and the 3rd one has $1,200.
Step one, stop using these cards!!
Step two, make only the minimum payments on the 1st and 2nd card and pay as much as you can on the card with the smallest balance. Pay off the smallest balance as quickly as you can. When that one is paid off, cancel the account.
Next, take all the money you were putting on that smaller balance card and begin paying it to the next highest balance each month, along with whatever minimum payment you had been making on #2 before. Soon the $3,000 balance will be gone and you'll have all kinds of money to start paying off your biggest credit card.
it's hard to do, but it works in theory. I've seen several financial advisers from Suzie Orman to Pat Robertson give the same advice |
