A savings bond is like having money in a savings account. It's like if you lend the government money. The longer you leave it there the more "compound" interest you will get. So lets for example, you have a 10% interest rate and leave it there for 10 years you'd have 500 dollars

just put it in the bank. You will earn interest on the bond. but it has to mature. |

The thing you are expecting in the mail, is the savings bond. You'll need to put it away for a year, because you cannot cash it in until then. After that year, you can continue to hold on to it or you can cash it in. It WILL NOT be worth $250 after that first year. It takes years for bonds to reach maturity, up to about 20 years. The longer you have it, the more it will be worth when you cash it in. |

You just won the best thing on earth, it is money and it stay in the bank while it sits there it gains interest over the years, because the bank borrows that money and pay you back with interest.
You know when your parents get a loan from the bank and they have to pay them bank plus a little extra just for borrowing it? Well it's like that so that $250 will turn into a whole lot more through the years and when you can finally get the money it will be more than $250 |
