I know for a fact that a check I wrote was deposited on Sat evening, after the banks closed. Unfortunately, I'm quite short on the funds. I get my paycheck via direct deposit on about 1AM Wed morning. Is that enough time?
I have Washington Mutual (yes, I know WAMU is now Chase), and the check recipient has Citi Bank. Also, I opened my WAMU account out of state.

Most checks are processed electronically and now only take 2 - 3 business days to clear. Saturday is not a business day. The check will not count as being deposited until Monday morning. Depending on how Wamu/Chase and Citi Bank process their work, the check could hit you account Tuesday. It's very doubtful though. I would guess that it wouldn't hit your account for payment until Wednesday, maybe even Thursday.
People don't realize how checks are processed. Citi Bank will do this deposit Monday. They will "run" their transactions through a different system (after the deposit is made) and electronically send it to the branch of the Fed Reserve they use. The Fed Reserve sorts everything out and sends the correct checks to correct banks for payment.
Being an out of state check does not matter any longer. Checks are processed electronically now so that the customer and the bank do not have to wait a week to see if the check is good However, it can still take a day or two for checks to clear. |

It will bounce as high as the bank itself come banking hours Monday morning. Unless of course the payee hangs onto it! You need to get yourself a line of credit! |

your cutting yourself close because most of this is done electronically now by check scanning. Get the necessary funds into your account by monday.Sorry but I suspect the check will try to clear by tuesday at the latest |

Banks have 24 hour check funding now--it's all sent electronically....SOooo, your check will be "sent" monday, and then the turnaround will be 24 hours later...tuesdayy....

If the check was deposited sat. night. It's not going to be deducted until Tuesday. It depends if your checking is already overdrawn then it might bounce, but if it's not then no; the check will not bounce, but you will get an overdraft fee (usually $35) |

I would guess the check would be presented for payment on Tuesday. That means you have Monday until 3PM to cover it. Whenever I send a check for my mortgage payment to an out-of-state bank it usually hits my bank in 2 business days. The fastest I ever had a check I sent hit my account was 4 hours after I mailed it at the post office.
I would say you really don't have a prayer. Now you will get to pay an insufficient funds fee to WAMU, and they certainly need it more than you do. Look at it this way, you have your own little bailout going. |
