london lady
HELL YES!! that is wrong alright. I have a one bedroomed flat and i have one person with me, mine is only £60 for 8 months. sort yours out. refuse to pay it, say you want to see an account of it! it maybe an estimation though, but tell them your not happy. just change suppliers.

tygwyn
When we lived in a 2 bed house we were paying around £25 per month for gas so yours does sound a hell of a lot. Might be worth going back to your supplier - hopefully they've made a mistake :-)

I know it sounds a lot but it's probably right. I'm paying well over £100 pounds a month for a four bed house with a family of four.

ours was £375 from Feb till End April in a 4 bed house with 4 of us living here. then we changed to a gas card and its £30 a month. could be worth thinking about!

is it a meter reading or estimate? I think the average gas bill for 12 mths is around £900 so its not too bad. do you have central heating? gas cooker/fire etc...? I used to pay around £60 a mth for gas on a card meter in a 3 bed terrace with C/H and gas cooker. That was alot lol.

If you dont think you are being billed correctly, the bill they send you is done on an estimate of your gas usage so what i always do is take a meter reading and then call them up with the exact reading and they will adjust the bill accordingly.

Check the meter reading with what the bill says. Could be based on an estimate, which could be high.

Also have you had your central heating system serviced regularly - not doing this can boost the bill. Check thermosats in rooms, on rads, and on the hot water tank.

make sure your meter reading compares with that your bill. if not phone in the correct reading. Is this you first bill at this address? Did you send a meter reading on moving in? they tend to overestimate when they do not get a 'start' reading. One way of proving this is to take several reading over a set time to prove your weekly or monthly average, although this would have to take into account the time of year.

It depends on some different factors. R u on a pre paid meter? If the answer is yes then thats the most expensive way. Try and pay by DD cos u get a discount. I am presuming that the bill covers most of the winter months so no dont think thats too bad, especially if your water and cooking is also on gas. With 2 children, you probably have the heating on during the day. If your children and wife are not there during the day then maybe it is a little high. Check your readings yourself and dont pay estimated ones, they will always send u a new bill if it has been estimated. Know i shouldn't say this but British Gas has been on lots of consumer programmes as being the 'biggest rip of merchant'. So just hunt around for the best deals.

i would double check this although if you are with british gas they will deny everything & have rubbish customer service.
we were sent a bill back in february 06 & from dec 05 til feb they reckoned we'd used £288 worth of gas!! 3bed house 3 kids no sorry i dont think so!!
i think british gas & emu have a similarity...the can both shove their bills up there posterior pmsl

Without knowing a few more details, it is difficult to say; however, taking into account the fact that gas prices have risen alarmingly over the past 12 months, and according to my calculations, this bill covered at least some of the winter months, it is probably correct.

Assuming that you have not made any major changes in gas usage you could compare your current bills with previous ones, if available. Don't look at the pounds and pence but at the no of kWh.
