I call my bank and asked what was pending. I was told only one item was pending and the others are cleared and my available balance is such and such. What do you think they meant. Because I went to spend some of the available balance money I was hit with 4 overdraft fees. So, I called and was told by BOA that when they say cleared mean that it has not not posted but it's clearded from my account. I thought if it's cleared then it's done. Your opinion, please not sstupid opinion because I'm already mad about this.. No need to get madder.

when you use your debit card it may take up to a few days to "hit" your account, they must wait until the store processes the info through their back offices.
for ex, say you have 10 dollars in you account and you spend $2 on something and the item didn't hit your account yet, your acc might still say that you have $10 rather than $8 and if you purchase something for $10 thinking you have that money in your acc, well when the $2 posts and when the $10 posts, you'll end up with -$2 and you'll receive fees because of that.
usually for banks, every time something posts when you have a neg balance you will receive a fee. say you have that neg 2 dollars and you buy something for 10 cents, you could receive a fee just for taking your balance even more negative, in a way you're borrowing the banks money to pay for what you bought and thats why they fee.
so multiple items may have posted to your acc giving you the four fees.
you can usually get them to minimize the fees if you ask soon enough, you just have to be persistent with them, but some banks are ridiculous in not giving fee money back unless its "bank error"
the best things you can do is to open up an account for a bank that doesn't charge any fees whatsoever such as ING Direct

AND the most important thing you must to to avoid any more fees is to religiously have a check register and write every purchase in there subtracting and adding to the total consistently so that you know exactly what you have, not what the bank says you have. this will also help you to see if there is fraud or if the bank is taking money from you under your nose.
if you keep a register you can also say you have less money than you actually have and subtract $10 from your balance from a $5 purchase this way it's your own overdraft protection and the bank will say that you have more money than what you say you have!

Cleared means it went through. One item pending means that it hasn't yet gone through, and if there's not enough money in the account to cover the pending item, the item will be bounced and you'll receive a fee, or the item will be posted to your account and you'll receive a fee.
Maybe when they said it cleared, they meant they covered it but there wasn't enough money in the account? It's almost impossible for anyone to tell, you have to go into the bank and talk to someone and see a statement (you can usually view your account online, which would be easier) |

The bank only knows what is pending and what has cleared, they do not know if you just used your debot card, or have written two checks that haven;t been presented. They have no clue to the amount of these outstanding items. YOU need to keep the balance in a check register, adding and subtracting the deposits and checks / debits.
What they are saying is that you balance is $X.XX, then subtract the one pending charge.... they do not see anything else coming thru at this moment. Ten minutes later something could show....
Use your Bank's online banking to review the account mornings and evenings to cross check your balances accuracy in your check register.

sometimes when you make purchases it doesnt go into your account for 2 to 3 days. so maybe all of your transactions may have cleared but yet those purchases haven't gone into your account yet. it happens to my finace all the time. sometimes i believe they hold transactions on purpose to make sure your doing your own books. and its also a good waay for them to make money. i would call the bank and ask if they would help you out and try to take off some of the overdraft fee's most of the time they will do a courtsey one each year. good luck |
