The Capitalist
If i appear as co-signer in my car loan, does that still help to grow my credit score ?

Molly M
It might. It could also trash your credit rating if the person you co-sign for defaults on the loan because by co-signing, you agree to take over that debt if they are unable to pay. And if you don't pay either, your credit can be affected negatively as well.

Non-Stop Movie Watcher
Depends on whether you are a co-signer or co-buyer. If you're dealing with a dealership, it won't matter -- they'll always tell you that it will help your credit, whether they really plan on using you on the note or not. Before signing, contact the lender they intend to use and ask them.

no i believe the % goes based on your credit but if the person doesnt do the payments u get worse credit!

archduke
co-signing is like a two egded blade because it build credit but if the other person defauts on it or doesn't pay at all you would have to pick up where they drop off.

Yahoo
You can't co-sign on your own car loan. A co-signer is a guarantor. If you can't get your own loan, why would they let you co-sign?

Potentially.

However, if you need to co-sign for your friend/relative to qualify you are more likely to destroy your credit than benefit.

rrrevils
It will show up on your credit report. Don't miss any payments.

yes sir!

I believe so

INACTIVE
It still appears on your credit report as a debt to income ratio because you are liable in the event of their default so it doesn't help your score at all. It will help your credit worthiness providing the debts are always paid on time AFTER its paid but during the time the loan is active, you are guaranteeing that you will pay the loan/debt if the borrower cannot. I have learned the hard way... DON'T CO-SIGN!!!

smack
im not sure what ur situation is there but co signing a loan is the same as taking a loan out urself .... you are the one responsible for payments.... if payments are not made u would be responsible for the repo and it would go on ur report ... so keep those payments up. i absolutely wouldnt worry about building credit, that comes natuarally with time and not much credit history is infinitely better than a whole life of good credit and then a repo lol .... so if you are planning on cosigning for anyone including family you better just go ahead and ask yourself if YOU are ready to make payments on this car because it is in fact YOUR deal and only your responsibility ... they should outlaw cosigning imo.
... also ... bear in mind that hypothetically, if you cosigned for a car for your son ...and your name is on the car and he has an accident ..you would be the one to get sued to ...AND it would most likely go against your insurance ...AND most likely if insurance payments are not made YOUR license would be suspende ... even though sonny boy has the car and is making the payments you are still responsible in every way .....lol, it sucks , and yes i speak from experience ... it was a nightmare from day 1 .... the car got repo'ed and i wound up having to pay about twice what it was worth to get it out of repo and get everything else straightened out.
