If the bank mistakenly deposited $500 in your account, would you tell them?

pagodaboy2001
No need to tell them but do not touch the money. The bank will come back for it when they reconcile their accounts. The bank will take the money back out of your account and if your account goes negative you'll end up owing for overdraft fees.

Those people who say take the money are idiots, do not take their advice. They lack morals and so would you if you take the money, its called stealing. Another reason why you should listen to them is because of their lack of understanding of how banks work.

Of course i'd tell them. All these people who are saying no, would flip out at the bank if it made the error the opposite way and took $500 from their bank account. Has our society gotten so petty as to stoop to thievery.

Bob
Yes. Always be honest. Have character.

nuyoricanone
Yes, because they will be so quick to fix it while you make a transaction and charge you an overdraft fee.

Callum
I think I would actually.
You wouldn't want to spend any of it and then have the back turn around and act like you stole it or something.

Yes, because they are going to realize their mistake and in the end you will wind up with an overdraft fee. Also, it's just wrong. At the very least I would continue to act as though the $500 was not in my account and treat it as money I didn't have to spend because it isn't really my money in the first place. Doing that is still dishonest and wrong though.

Yes, because they will figure it out sooner or later and keeping it is illegal. It's not your money, it never will be.

if it was like 50, no

but 500 is quite a bit of money, and it might have been meant to go to the bank account of a single mom who worked hard for that 500 dollars. Who knows the bank might give you something in return for being honest. But i would tell them since it is such a high amount of money.

wouldn't you want someone to tell the bank if your money was deposited by accident into their account?

Angellica
If it was important the will find out by themselves what they did and take the money back. If the money stayed there long enough I would spend it.

Jargon Josh
Absolutely No Way.

Duffer
Under British law you have no duty to inform the bank of their error. However, the money is never yours, and would have to be paid back when asked. In the meantime it could reduce your overdraft charges!

Ross E
**** NO!!!

Treat Yourself!!

They made the mistake so it's their job to fix it. If they don't, I consider the money mine.

Edit: Why all the thumbs downs?

I would withdraw it and then open another deposit account with the same bank and put it in there fore a while. At least you might get some interest on it even if they, in some mysterious way, remembered about losing it,
