If there are two people listed on one bank account, and only one owes money, can they still seize your funds?
I owe money on credit cards and have been unable to pay them. I am still unable to pay them and am at great risk for all of my money being taken out of my bank account. I was just wondering if I put another person on a bank account with me, would that prevent companies from taking money out of my account?

No. All you'll be doing is making the other person liable. You should be paying your bills. Since you spent the money, you should have been responsible enough to keep track of your expenses and spend only what you can afford. Credit card companies can not automatically garnish your bank account funds unless you allow it or they legally have permission from court. If they are doing it without authorization, you can sue.

Don't go 2 hell,HeavenAwaits
Yes, I believe so, Right now they have taken my income tax checks for filing joint with my wife because she had a student loan before I knew her, and still owes it, so I've learned never to file joint again, at least until she gets that taken care of. they have taken two or three checks from me for it.Testing to see if it was over after alot of years now and then but no, so I won't file joint again.

Yes, any account you sign on can be garnished, including joint accounts you hold with other people.

No it would not.

Because you are still the primary account holder, they will still take the money.

If you have money in your account, then you should pay it to the cc companies.

Or, close your account and use money orders.

No, it would not prevent that account from being seized.

If you have someone you really trust (parent etc.), you could put the money in their name only with you as the beneficiary. That way they the creditors would not have access to it, and if something happened to that person the money would go back to you.

old lady
If the account is a joint one, then both partners suffer when one runs up enough debt that creditors seize the account. If you ask someone to become partners with you under those circumstances, and don't tell them the financial bind that you are in, then you could be sued by that person, as well as having your bank account frozen..
Not a good move.

No, it won't help. They other person would have to prove that they were entitled to said money and would only recoup half of it. If you're married, you are pretty well screwed until it's straightened out.

not to worry they will continue sending the bill , my suggestion is to send them something each month or call and tell them ,, hope it isn't to much ,,,,

That Asian guy
No, the bank will still be taking money on that account. The best way is to open on another bank , not same bank or make the payments. One more advice......Go bankrupt, what else to lose your credit score is bad already......

joint account = your account (because instructions are usually and/or signatory)

under the eyes of the law, the credit card company can still seize monies in your joint account.

if you want to prevent the credit card companies from taking your last savings, withdraw all your monies from your bank account and keep it under your pillow. ;)

best advise seriously - pay up your credit card debts. call the bank, speak to them, tell them you can't pay. they can help work out some kind of instalment payment. there are just far too many people out there who can't pay their bills and are running away like you. the credit card companies will be more than happy to make some kind of arrangements with you. you will be surprise what kind of arrangements they will agree to - including freezing the interest (which is usually the one which kills you!)

Yes they can.

absolutely! Not fair but true do not know this through personal experience... But never the less it s true... sorry if you wanted a different answer !!! a different last name would be ideal, like your married brother or sister.. consolidate and call your debtors and show good faith they'll work with you ..
believe me. tt
