If you are off sick, how do you pay all your bills from ssp?,it's only about £70 a week?

You can get insurance for when you are off work due to illness. The SSP is to help you out and not to pay all your bills. What should the state pay? Your broadband bill, your car costs, your credit cards, where does it stop. It is like the Job seekers allowance. It is there to help you out. Trouble is so many people stay on benefit, IE young single mums, drug addicts, lazy people who have never paid into the welfare state. Too many people expect far too much from the state. I know a young mother who is 21 and has never worked. She has 5 children, a council house a dog two rabbits and a seven seater MPV. She claims a fortune every week and keeps on turning out babies so she doesn't have to go to work. The kids have different fathers who are on state benefits and have never worked. One is married with 4 kids all fed and clothed on the state. The woman I speak of has a babysitter twice a week provided by the state because she cannot cope with her kids. They collect the kids and return them later in the day to give her a break. She batters them and gets away with it. She also goes out drinking every Friday and Saturday night. Everything in her house has been provided by the likes of you who normally work for a living. She had her first child at 14 and her language is foul. That is why the state cannot pay you any more than 70 pounds a week. Hands up anyone who knows of similar cases.

that's the problem you cannot, you can apply for housing benefit but not always granted. that's why alot of people carry on working even when they are really ill the system sucks!

Yes sick pay is dreadful, if you find yourself in this position, telephone or write to any company you make regular payments to and explain your situation, don't wait till it's too late. Most company's are very sympathectic and will reduce your payments until you are fit enough to return to work. You can contact your energy suppliers, telephone company and ask for a prepayment card then pay off what you can afford each week too. Don't forget to cancel DD's at bank you can always start them up again and the bank won't be making money out of you going overdrawn etc.
It's really hard but most companys will respect you so much for pre-warning them and trying to keep your finances under control. Some people may say you should have insurance or savings in readiness for this kind of thing happening, however not everyone is in a high paid job and some people literally just make enough to make ends meet, so ignore any such comments! Hope this helps. x

Go to the Citizens Advice Bureau, they'll help you I'm sure, and be able to show what benefits if any you're entitled to.

If you are genuinely sick and need help paying bills contact your local council for a rebate, also your mortgage or your landlord and apply for a rebate on rent and time to pay your mortgage. Also contact your loans company and explain your situation. Don't sit on it and expect it to go away it won't, act now and it will save you a lot of worry in the future when the bills start pouring int.

Welcome to the world of Tony Blair and crew. You will also learn that if your spouse works more than (I think) 28 hours, you are unable to claim any other benefit. Its no wonder many people get divorced, you can claim so much more when sick.
I was shocked to learn I could only claim minimal sums when I was off work for the first time in 38years and I have a big mortgage and two children.

That's correct and this is why you should take out some sort of Income Protection through your bank.

How much are your bills? We can't answer this question without that information. SSP isn't designed to be a long term income its designed to be a safety net to help people out in times of crisis.

Have you ever heard the expression 'saving for a rainy day'?

kate
It usually takes one real sick experience for people to learn the value of 'living below your means'.
Once that occurs, your savings build rapidly and you have extra $$ for the $$ down times OR if life goes well health wise, you have extra $$ for travel, projects or schooling.
But most people learn it by having that 1st sick time & not being able to make their bills. Hopefully this is just part of your learning curve and your $$ future will be much better managed.

I am 20 years old and have recently brought a property with my partner (26). I have been involved in a car crash due to no fault of my own and now severely depressed because I am having to look at living off the statatury sick pay. This barely covers my half of the mortgage and we have a very small mortgage of £400 pound which we did so that we could afford to save money in the mean time. Now this money has gone and as everyone knows personal injury claims or any car insurance pay out takes agesss! What is there to help me now? We are used to having 2 full time salaries and mine was the biggest! We are now having to live off a 1/3 and our outgoings at the the moment are 2/3s. I dont have kids (wouldnt consider it until I can afford them!!!) I am completely self sufficient but now I am in a rutt and can see no way out. I dont want to loose my flat! Can anyone help?
