birdiesquill | If you haven't planned financially for your children's education what do you do? |
People don't realize how fast time goes, and before they know it, they have one or more kids ready for college. I'm looking for suggestions for people who have kids in high school or ready for college. I think the children should help pay for college. What do you think? |

I agree, children should help pay for college - it is a great life lesson on the value of an education. However, there are also lots of grants and student loans that can help. Additionally, a large portion of corporations now offer tuition reimbursement - that is how my wife got her BA and her MBA...we didn't pay for anything but her text books :) |

Do everything you can to help them locate grants and scholarships.
It won't hurt them to work their way through college. Lot's of people do! |

Well, right now we aren't saving for his because we are currently going to school and paying for our own. He is going to have to earn his way through college and get loans, just like we have to. |

Most kids would not want to help - there may be a few. If by some strange chance they do wish to continue their education, it may be worth talking to your financial adviser about re-mortgaging your home for the required funds. |

Yes, I think the children should help pay for their college education. Three of our girls graduated from college. One went to a private school, and she worked part time, and we assisted. The second one went through on working part time for the college (a state school) and full scholarship. The third we paid for (state school) because we were in a position to do so. State schools are usually more affordable.
First, I would recommend your student and you meet with the school guidance counselor and fill out the appropriate financial aid forms so if you are eligible for financial aid, that will be in place. Much aid is governed by law, so filling out these forms is vital. Do it as soon as possible for the next school year.
Secondly, there are MANY scholarships available. There are the local ones given at graduation which range from 100 dollars to maybe two thousand. Also, there are scholarships awarded by the college itself to academically outstanding students. These are usually applied for at the time of application. Consult with the financial aid department of the college your child plans to attend. Finally, there are many scholarships awarded by groups you may belong to, such as your church, fraternal organizations (Elks, Eagles, Moose), Mothers' Club,4H, or work related (your union, your workplace, Walmart, Prudential).
It will take time to seek what is available for you, but it is well worth the time. One caution: DO NOT be sucked in by those who advertise they can get you a scholarship if you pay them a fee. Most are frauds. Check with the guidance department in your school to see if the organizations you are seeking help from are legit. You should NEVER have to pay for this service.
I hope this helps. Good luck!! (I was an educator for 40 years and worked to help students get financial aid.) |

I tell mine, there's always the service. But with George Bush in office - that's not an option.
Hopefully, times will get better and the future will take care of itself. |

My children are not going to college. We pay school fees at the beginning of each year. They are not aiming that high.Otherwise, I think it's a good idea. |

Well my parents told all of us (my siblings) that if we wanted a higher education then we'd have to pay it ourselves. I think that it's understandable that the child pay all or some of their tutition fees, they're the ones getting the benefit from it and making them pay the money will teach them responsibility and make them value their education more since it's coming out of their own pocket. |

it would be better if they didn't have to pay for it, but obviously if there is no saved money, then they don't have a choice but to contribute if they want to go to college. |

i think kids should help pay for college. if there's no plan they'll have to apply for scholarships and financial aid. after that it's a combination of working to pay for it and loans. |

I feel your angst--same thing happened to me--poof! The girls were ready for college! Indeed they worked part-time and educational loans are easy to obtain. There are TONS of scholarships available as well. While we did poorly planning financially, we did work with the girls to keep their grades up so that helped in getting them in the doors. |

This question is more complex than it sounds. There are two important elements you must consider, do the children themselves want to proceed to further education? if the answer is yes, then you have to think about are they gifted enough for further education to make any significant contribution to their futures? if the answer to both questions is yes, then find any way you can to pay the fees, remortgage your house, get a loan, borrow from relatives, whatever it takes!! BUT only on the understanding that if they are so eager and committed to go, then one way or another they have to pay you back!! That will REALLY test their true intentions. Tell them they must help you by giving you 25% of anything they earn until they have paid you back 110% of the total cost! Keep inflation in mind and treat this as a business arrangement. This will also give them a very useful lesson in financial management. There is no such thing as a 'free lunch'!
Should it be the case that they don't want to go anyway or they do not have the aptitude for it to make a difference to their chances, then don't push them into College, push them out to work! Let them save some money so if they change their minds they can pay for their own education later, probably with more options available. Hope this helps! |

Pray..datz wut my mum n dad did..when everytime that they thought..they ***** keep up with our fees..God is so gud!..he always provides it on time..

workin..to pay up thier own college fee..cud give them a lot off strain n cud be a reason for possible drop outz..n distractions..
