If you were behind on your bills and money was short, what would you do?
I'm not poor but I'm struggling financially like most people in this country. I'm used to being poor and now I have a house and car so how do people who are stable do it?

Stop ALL discretionary spending until things are under control. If necessary, combine this with getting a second job temporarily.

Discretionary spending means ANYTHING you can do without, no matter how difficult or inconvenient.

Examples of discretionary expenses:

o A new electronic gadget (TV, MP3 player, etc.)
o A new car
o Cable or Satellite TV (buy an antenna)
o Cell phone
o Eating out
o Going to the movies or other types of entertainment
o Buying unnecessary food or drink (chips, beer, etc.)
o Unnecessary driving
o Fitness club membership
o Clothing other that what's absolutely required for school or work and then only when your existing clothing is beyond repair.
o Etc., Etc.

You can make a major impact on your financial situation if you take these actions. Once you've got things back under control, you can quit the second job and then cautiously add back some of your discretionary spending but only after you're sure it can be sustained and not just create your financial problems all over again.

I have family members who struggle financially and will never be able to retire. Why? Because they do a lot of discretionary spending that I wouldn't even consider, personally. Sure, they take great pleasure in there unlimited minutes cell plan, their 200 channel premium cable package, etc. But they're always stressed over paying all the bills. I live more simply and without the stress or worry.

Its me!!! :)
Only have what you REALLY need, not what you REALLY want.. It makes a difference...

I would work out a budget. Only buying things of necessity.

What i had to do was look at my bills and first pay the ones that could be repossessed or turned off. The others had to wait.

DO NOT use those check into cash or title loan places, they are a rip off. You need to assess what you really need. Do you have cable...maybe cut down on the "extra" features. Refinance your car. Alot of power companies let you have a bill plan that you pay the same amount all year regardless of use (they take a years bill and average the cost). This way in the months u use more power your not over run. If you use a debt consolidation company, be prepared it does not look good on your credit report.

Sell some crap around the house. eBay, pawn shop, yard sale, etc... Watch what you spend. Cut down on the extras. Don't skip oil changes and stuff like that. That will just cause more problems later.

And heck.. if you have to, get a 2nd job.

Staceygurl
I feel your pain, try cutting back debts, ie sell your car and get a cheaper one, move into a smaller house, I realized the hard way that the stress that comes with nice new big things isn't worth with. I cut back alot and now I'm so much happier.

Don't spend more than you make.

Don't buy it unless you need it.

Don't always buy the newest and greatest but make do with what you have.

If you don't have the money in hand to buy it, don't buy it on credit but save a bit each month until you can buy it.

Cut down where you can.

Don't get all the extra toys and gadgets to keep up with everyone else.

Try to get by on the stuff that you need the most. Only buy food that you know that you are going to eat and try buy the store brands...they are just as good as the name brands. If money is just too short, miss paying the bills that aren't too important. Live without the luxuries like cable or Internet and you can scrap by. Maybe a second job will help too. My husband and I have been living like this for a year now with a kid and we are making out better then expected.

I would make a budget!!! A budget is the only way that you can know how much is coming in & going out. Cut back on additional expenses that are not necessary. Depending on how deep in the hole you are, depends on what you need to do. Right now, it may seem like the end of the world is closing in, but just remember that it is only money.

If you are barely getting by, and just have your mortgage, property taxes, car loan, credit card debt & normal household expenses, then you are not alone. Pretty much everybody has all that. I would re-evaluate your life, and see what you can change in order for you to save and put towards your debt. If you have enough equity in your house, like lets say you bought it more than 2-3 years ago, and the value has gone up significantly, then you might want to consolidate; go to your bank and get a second (home equity line) on the house. This way you can consolidate all your bills into that one, and it may be able to lower what you pay monthly, so that you don't lose your house. The most important investment you have is your house. I would do whatever you can to keep that, because that is the only thing that will go up in value. A car loses it's value when you drive it off the lot, and all the stuff you buy on your credit card probrobly doesn't have value. But, If you are on the verge of losing your house, like you have missed more than one payment, I would try to sell it. It is alot better trying to sell your house, and renting something else than just losing it. By selling it, you might make a little profit off of it, and keep a decent credit history; but by not selling, you will lose the good credit history that you have and lose out on any equity (profit) that your house has gained.

I would also cut up or stash away your credit card so you don't use it. Buy only what you need, not want. Stop living above your means, because most people in this county like to keep up with the jones' or have what the celebrities have, and that is not always an option. Most celebrities get alot of their clothes, purses, etc. for free, even though they can afford it. Rich people are rich because they don't spend on frivolous things. Good luck!

I usually pay the bills that need to be paid and I try to do without things that I don't need. It's hard to make a decision when you're already living off of the bare neccessities but things usually work out if we are wise about it.

If I knew it was a short term crunch, I'd pay the mortgage and anything else critical, and just be late on the others. I've paid things a week or 2 late before when I forgot, and it's never come back to bite me. I guess my creditors know my history and know they're gonna get paid, so they just take the late fee and don't bug me about it. I might work overtime for extra money.

If I thought it was a long term problem, I'd think about what expenses I could cut out of my budget and not mind too much. Call waiting and caller ID could go. Cable TV could go. I could go out to eat less often. For years even after I bought a house, I didn't buy a car (and discouraged my ex from buying one) because I knew that was the difference between living hand to mouth and being able to save a little money and afford treats like nice computers and vacations.
