yakngirl | If you were offered $35,000/year for the rest of your life to retire now would you take it? |
It's a modest salary, but the money is guaranteed for life and the person is young enough that he can get another job and bank the retirement money until he needs it. The retirement benefit also includes a yearly cost of living adjustment. On the other hand, his retirement will increase for each year he continues to work. Additional Details He's a 51 year old university employee and is fully vested in his retirement and has reached the minimum required age to begin collecting his benefit. He would retire from THAT job, but would be free to find another and still collect the benefit. This isn't make-believe. It's a real life decision and we've been weighing the pros and cons for several months. He only has until the end of June to make a decision for this academic year. |

These type buyout deals were common in the 80's and early 90's. Many of the early retirees that took the deals have regretted it. Many have found new careers and loved it. Depends on ones outlook on life interests and social skills. It's not for everyone but a godsend for some. |

No way. That would be taking a HUGE pay cut now AND during retirement for me. Why on Earth would I want to live on such a low salary?? I made more than that BEFORE graduating college. |

id continue working until age 35 or 40, and keep that money in the bank and let it accrue, that way, id use the 35000 money for my early retirement and then when i turn 65 id get the actual retirement from my actual job |

Well, since we are i nmake believe land (not sure the point of this question).
Yes, I'd take it assuming I was allowed to go get another job.
In the real world, you would not collect any retirement from a job until you reached retirement age. |
