Momiji | If your income is $100,000 a year, how much do you have left? |
If you earn $100,000 USD and you live in a $300,000 home, how much money do you make after paying all the bills, grocery, other items(PS3), tax, etc.?
You live by yourself and a dog. Additional Details Like, you earn 100k from work. How much will you have left to put in your bank account after you spend like a average person. |

The short answer is a lot less than you think, and the person who guessed $65K is out of his mind.
Right off the bat, if your gross is $100 K, you'll probably take home 70% of that, so let's say a take home of $70 K after taxes. For simplicity let's say you pay nothing for your health care insurance (it's likely you'd pay something, but let's say you have a great employer.)
Let's do this monthly.
$70,000 after tax /12 months = $ 5,833.33 monthly take home.
Here are my bills: (I'm 34, I have a dog and four cats)
$100/week groceries x 4 wk = $400/month
$50/week gas (my car gets approx 20 mpg) x 4 = $200/month
cell phone (PDA, internet on it)= $120/mo
Cable/cable 'net (no hbo, but all other channels)= $100/mo
car payment (2004 Jag S type) = $460/mo ( i overpay slightly)
gas bill= $50/month
electric = $100/month (average,winter is higher
you said a $300 k house, so maybe $ 1,500/mo mortgage
(this will vary wildly depending on your rate)
are you contributing to your 401(K)? figure $ 500/month
this is at 6%, a decent contribution
homeowners insurance, let's say $100/month
car insurance, I pay approx $ 50/month
you'd have sewage trash etc, maybe $40/month
property taxes, vary wildlly, let's say $ 300/month
If you add those numbers up, you get $ 3,920
We said take home is $ 5,833.33, so less $ 3,920 you have $ 1,913.33 per month, or $478 per week.
Note that I didn't factor in:
clothing
entertainment/going out
charitable donations (NPR, political causes,etc)
newspapers (I subcribe to several)
car repairs/oil changes
vacations
home repairs/maintenance (yard, etc)
My guess is you'd have a discretionary after all that of $200 or so per week.
Certainly not bad, but you're not rolling in it.
Keep in mind, I'm in PA, where you live will be a factor in how much the above lists costs.
Also, your tastes/style. Can you drive a cheaper car, etc?
I keep wracking my brain, i am sure I am missing expenses here, but you get the idea.
I also have other bills like motorcycle payments/insurance etc, but I just focused on the basics. Also, do you have student loan/credit card debt? Factor in those monthly as well.
There is nothing wrong with a $100,00 salary, but just bear in mind that it doesn't go as far as you think. |

Very little to nothing left over.
The more you make the more you need. You'll be no better off saving any money than someone that makes a fraction of the $100K. |

We make 100K and cant afford a 300K house. So my guess is that there isnt much leftover. |

My guess is that the house payment is closer to $3,000 per month including interest and insurance. Utilities will average about $400 per month. Food will be cheaper for you than for the doggie but still factor another $400 per month. Your income taxes will average about 20 percent after all the crazy calculations. Your car payment and insurance is about $700 a month. You also have deductions for Medicare and a pension plan. Right now that leaves about $18,000 for the year but you still have pet expenses, alarm system, clothes to buy, entertainment expenses (dating and such), car maintenance, house maintenance, cable tv, internet costs, and charitable contributions. You could be living pay check to pay check depending on your self discipline and ability to avoid throwing money away on foolish or unnecessary purchases. If you have a lot of credit card dept, the interest expense is another burden to your take home pay.
In short, the answer to your question,
you have about $20 left a week to splurge (if you're lucky).
Good luck. |

The monthly mortgage + taxes + insurance on a $300,000 home would be about $2000/month plus any other expenditures that you can add in. Do the math. Don't listen to Brandon S. I doubt someone who can't spell "sweet" makes $400,000/year. |

my husband makes 90k a year and we live in a 90k home have 2 car payments and motorcycle payment normal bills and groceries...that leaves us with $600-$800 left over to "blow" or save every pay period (bi-weekly). You on the other hand...having a 300k home is probably draining your account! Not to mention how many cars you have and whatever else... |

They say your house usually takes up about 25% of your total income. Utilities such as electric, garbage, water, and gas another 25%. 25% for food and tolietries, and I think like 15% on gas or transportation such as car payment and insurance. All in all I think you would have like at least 15-20% of your income to use on savings and fun stuff. with a 300,000 house your payments would probally be like 1,500-2,500 a month. Possibly 30,000 yearly. With a 100,000 income, a 300,000 house would definatly be affordable and you would still be living very very comfortably!!! My parents make about 40,000 and have a 150,000 house and still live comfortably. |
