In these interesting economic times, how do YOU save money on groceries?

Hi Indi!

It's best to clip coupons and use them to purchase sale items. Also, I wait for the supermarkets to have a buy one get one free sale in addition to doubling the coupons. Kroegers normally has the doubling of coupons. Food Lion has a lot of buy one get one free sales too.

Wednesday & Sunday is normally the day that most supermarkets will place ads in the newspaper. So I try to keep abreast of what the stores are up too.

Finally, depending upon what you like to use plenty of , buying in bulk helps. I normally buy soap, toilet paper, tooth paste, 10lb bags of rice and things like that in bulk, because I always need it.

Oft times I go to the dollar store and purchase at least 6 tubes of toothepaste for .99 a tube (big tubes). I hate to run out of the things I need.

Some things are good to buy in bulk, because it saves you money in the long run. On those days when my money is short, at least I know that when I get home I have everything I need.

And if the weather gets really bad and the stores close early and the roadways are shut down, at least I know that I have enough of what I need at home not to panic (like everyone else-smiles).

And finally, if a neighbor comes to my house in need of something, I am usually able to help.

There are some things that I only have to buy once or twice a year!

Have a great weekend.

I cut tons and tons of coupons and I look for free samples. Here are a few links you can try.

Might sound old fashioned but clip coupons. You will start to notice savings after just a few trips to the store. Also get yourself a saver card from your supermarket. Most stores offer discounts to only those with the card.

Another idea is to buy generic brands instead of name brands. Most of the generics are the same anyway. You really won't notice the difference and you get the same quality.

Cut down on buying snacks and buy fruits and vegetables to snack on. A box or Oreo cookies is about the same as a dozen apples. Plus you will eat healthy and feel better.

Clip coupons, by things on sale, go to specialty markets for like bread and meat.

Most stores have sales in cycles. For example, I can count on my local stores to have sales on toilet paper, paper towels, chicken breast, cereal, etc. every so many weeks - about once a month. I shop those sales and use coupons as well for extra savings. The coupons can really, really help. If I know the store is only having chicken breast on sale once a month, I buy a few packs (month's supply) and put them in the freezer and use them weekly until the next sale.

You will also find that the manufacturer's coupons are issued in similar cycles. For example, P&G puts out a coupon flyer about once a month. If you time the sales and coupons right, you can have a coupon for that item each month when it's on sale.

In addition there are lots and lots of sites that help you match up coupons with sales and so on. There are lots of tips and helpful hints from people who shop specific stores that can help you find great deals too. For example - the site below is a really good one and it's broken down by store. That way you can access only the stores you have in your area. There are also 'insider' secrets such as previews of upcoming sales and circulars to help you match your coupons with the sales.

Shop at multiple stores - buying the items specifically on sale - Scale back on processed foods too - simplicity is not cost effective

I wish I could figure that out. It costs more to feed my husband and me than it did when our 4 children were living at home.

Basing my week's menu on sale items. Buying in bulk and stocking up on the buy one get one free.

forget the name brands, coupons, 2 for ones, hit the sales and mark downs and clearance items. i buy meat 2 for 1 cut the roast in 1/2 so iam getting 4 meals for the price of 1. find out from the meat dept what day of the week they put out the last day or mark down meats, get there early to get the best selections. its good as long as you get it to your freezer when you get it home. repack all your meats into meal sizes also helps not to waste
