Income support how can you manage?
i am prob going to medically dismissed soon from my job of 20 yrs and gather i will get £60 a wk income support- not being funny and i know thousands do, but how can u live on that?

my wage is only £120 a wk now, i have no car dont smoke or drink or go out, my food is £35 a wk (stuff like hair products etc unfortunately make it come to this!) my gas etc is £20 a wk and i only have heating on coulpe hours at night, take a bath once a wk and two min showers each day, so i understand my mobile and internet will have to go, presumably my council tax will be paid so that leaves me with a fiver a week!

so my tv licence will have to come out of this so leaves me £2 a wk for hairdressers, clothes etc i will have to shop each day as cant afford a taxi home and have no internet to order online (unless go library where you get a free half hour then its £1.50 per half hour)

so honestly how do other peopel manage? i have no friends literally or family and have a rescue rabbit and elderly dog so if they need the vet then what?

im worried now!
Additional Details
to the gentleman who wonders why i did not save for a rainy day- on £120 a wk there is not much left to save altho i do have £2000 saved but was hoping not to have to blow this on the luxuries of food and heating. i cannot work more than 24 hours a wk due to slipped discs and furthermore am a carer to my blind father for 35 hours a wk and have looked afetr him since 1980 at age 9 wen my mother walked out.

I AM INCENSED BY THIS COMMENT- I DONT SMOKE DRINK WENT TO THE CINEMA LAST IN 1999 HAD A HOLIDAY IN 2001, AND 'SELFISHLY' SPENT £1200 SINCE JUNE ON VETS FEES FOR A HOMELESS ANIMAL I TRIED TO PUT A ROOF OVER ITS HEAD SO HOW DARE YOU TELL ME I HAVE NOT PUT MONEY AWAY FOR A RAINY DAY? I WORK WITH YOUND MEN IN THEIR 20'S WHO LAUGH AS THEY TAKE HOME £300 A WK JUST IN VARIOUS BENEFITS AS THEY KEEP KNOCKING UP MORE WOMEN, I THINK YOU SHOULD FOCUS YOUR OPINIONS ON THEM SIR

It is hard but manageable. You will keep your Carer's Allowance and get about £38 Income Support which gives you £87 a week. If you are in rented accommodation, then your rent will be paid and you will not have to pay council tax.

You will find that you have to use cheaper products, the animals have cheaper food and you are continually on the look out for bargains. Hairdressers and expensive hair products are out of the window. You tend to make it longer between trips to the hairdressers - save it for a big treat rather than a necessity. You are not working now so don't have to be 'salon dressed' every day.

You look at what is essential. You are a carer for an elderly man so a phone line is essential - as is the internet if you are stuck in the house a lot - it's often the only contact you have with people you do not see day in and day out!! Look for cheaper options. BT is about the most expensive.

It is hard. I'm also a carer. A member of the Government's unseen slave army who save this country millions by doing this heavy, hard work ourselves rather than shouting for someone else to do it. If we all had our rights, we would be getting paid a living wage and not treated as scum! It will be hard, your priorities will change but it is just about doable - you can survive but you certainly can't live!

You may also be able to claim

Council Tax Benefit - up to 100%
Housing Benefit - Up to 100% rent
Help with mortgage payments
Free Prescriptions
Free Dental treatment
Free optical test and vouchers towards glasses or contact lenses
Fuel payments if the temperature falls below a certain amount - I think this is around £10.00

Just from my own outgoings a month this represents a saving of around £600.00

You may also be entitled to:
Healthy eating scheme - Free fruit, veg and milk.
Help with travel costs
Free government payment of £500.00 - I think this is called a crisis loan and you may have to have been on income support for a while

I think there are also various charities such as RSPCA that provide free vetinary care for pets but you will have to check in your local area.

It may be worthwhile getting a cheap pet insurance plan to cover any expenses.

Try this link:
http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/stellent/groups/jcp/documents/sitestudio/dev_015400.pdf

If however you are entitled to disability then this may help:

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/discare/

If you are stuck for internet access then contact your local citizens advice office. The number for your area should be in the Yellow Pages. the web address is http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/benefits.htm

Budget for the week, take advantage of any coupons or offers available and if not done already consider having an electric or gas meter installed, they are slighty more expensive than a bill but you can see exactly how much you are using.

There are also schemes where you can pay for other services weekly - such as tv licence, water rates etc. I think the post office will have details of these.

If you have to leave your job because of medical reasons and you have worked for the last 20 years you may qualify for incapacity benefit, or whatever it's called this week. You may also qualify for Disability living allowance. If you rent, then there's housing benefit. It takes a lot of budgeting but it is do-able. If you've still got one near you, go and see the CAB

Hi, read your edit. If you are caring your dad, you may get carers allowance and you dad may get attendance allowance.

Depending where you are in the country, you may have a PDSA near you who will help with the care of your animals' veterinary needs

Not knowing your full story............but if you are going to be long term sick, you may go on to incapacity benefit, which is about £160 per fortnight. It is scary and not easy, if you live on £120 per week at the moment, you are used to budgeting.
You will be entitled to housing benefit if you rent your property, and council tax benefit.
You need to trim a bit off your food bill, drop the hair products, or go to a cut-price shop. Start to eat home-cooked food, make enough for 2 meals and freeze one. Get the animals on cheaper food.
Change your mobile to a pay as you go, put on what you can afford and no more.
Shopping everyday in the local shop will become expensive, think about a bus.
Places like the library can be good places to go, you can spend all day in there in the warm.
Charity shops are good place to pick up all sorts of things, maybe even volunteer to help, you will meet people and have somewhere to go.
Also if you are on certain benefits the RSPCA will treat the animals.
Everybody manages in different ways, nobody finds it easy, except the one who work as well.

well for starters your going to have to do without new things until you can save up for them.
I don't know about your country or cost of living there or services that may be available.
Start cutting coupons and cutting down on weekly grocery costs. Look for chaities in your area that will help cut these costs.
God Bless you and good luck with your situation.

I feel sorry for you if you were my friend and lived in Australia i probably would put you up until you got on your feet.

You need to apply for Incapacity benefit and DLA, if you are medically unfit permanently for work. Here is a link to the governments website, hope this helps you

now this will sound harsh but i was on treble to what you are getting now and then my back gave way to pain and pain like i had ever felt before, so after a few days of hospital treatment it was down to the Drs and he gave me a sick note for 2 weeks at a time then he up it to a month at a time, etc
But you will learn to go down the shops when they reduce their prices around an hour before they shut, i went one week down to the local co-op for milk and spent me last £20 on food which lasted me nearly 3 weeks yes every thing was at the end of sale by date so what straight in the freezer when i got in
you could also try and get a bus pass its not just for the over 60s helps for those with a invalidity see your Dr about it
and sorry no luxuries like hairdressers [i would rather have internet than give money to a hairdresser]

hmmm. I think the mistake you made was 20 years ago when you chose to spend all of your income and not save for a rainy day. Too late or you, but maybe some others will figure it out. It is a sad story I see a lot.
