Is $1,500.00 too much to spend on a graduation party?
Is there really a nice way to tell my parents my party shouldn't cost the same as my new laptop? I don't want them going broke.
Additional Details
That's what I thought too but I don't know how I can tell my parents to stop spending.

You are the sweetest child in the world, they obviously feel you deserve it. A parent looks forward to this moment from the day you are born. That is actually not an unreasonable amount I have seen them reach $5,000 plus. But Like I said this is as special to them as it gets. Don't look at it as them spending the money on you, look at it as them enjoying the fruits of their labor. You graduating (and especially going on to college) means they have achieved their dreams in life, and you will understand it better if you choose to have children. But If you feel that it is still to much, than when you finish college and get that nice paying job get them some cruise tickets, just to say "I love you"

This is a major milestone in your life. You will look back on this day for the rest of your life. This is one of those days you will tell your future children about.

It is one of the very last things left for your parents to do for you before you start a whole new phase in your life. Just know how fortunate you are to have parents who "want" to do this for you, and gracefully accept their generosity.

a kinder, gentler me
"Mom, Dad, $1500 is WAY too much to waste on a party that's only going to last a few (?) hours. How about we throw a reasonable party in the backyard, and you give me a grand as a graduation gift? That way, the money can be put to good use! Thanks! I knew you'd understand! Love ya!"

missy
yes way to much...you need to talk to them heart to heart

No it is once in a life time go all out.. My kids never even went to Graduation.. so make the best of it.. love Mama Giggles

As a parent, they want to give their "baby" a good send off. However, 1500 is crazy if you don't want them too, tell them you would like an open house that way your friends and relatives can drop by and get some lunch meat trays and munchies pop and a cake. That's what my daughter wanted when she graduated from high school and that seems to be the norm around here (western pa) some also had their parties out in a park all they had to pay for was the pavilion.( 50-150 dollars)
For College she just wants a new laptop.
best of luck to you!!!

What are you graduating from? How much do your parents spend on other things? A party should be fun and not a sacrifice. You sound like a nice person.

jen
It depends on if it is affordable for you. Your parents are proud of you, and are trying to show you they are. Congratulations for reaching this point in your life, and good luck in the future!

Ask them do they want you to move out or go to college with extra money. Then save that waste of money and put it to good use.College or moving out your not a little girl anymore move out.Let your wings fly.

too much for high school graduation, not too much for a PhD.Tell them that you love them & want to keep it friends and family. If you live far from other family members, your parents may be treating this like it is a huge family get-together; a chance for people who ordinarily wouldn't have a chance to spend time together, to hang out.Just wait until you get married!!!! lol

I'd just tell them straight out: I want a small party. I don't want you spending that much money. Hey, a small get together with friends and ordering out pizza is just as fun as hosting a huge party with a bunch of people who half of which you won't even talk to anyways. For my graduation a friend and I got together at my house, invited a few friends each and we all ordered pizza, stayed up all night, and had a blast. The next day we slept all day, then went to a movie. That was the extent of my graduation party. Costed about $40. Total.

just print out this page and let them see it. If they have cash to spare, let them spend it on something that will last longer than one day. They sound like they're cool parents, so tell them to keep it to $500 and keep the rest for themselves.
