Is $23,000 a year for a family of 4 considered really poor?

hmm...not very good. Sounds like someone should go to school and get an education so you can make a better life for your family.

try this site!
http://cashcrate. com/131862 (Take the space out before com)
That's the site I use. I get about an extra $60-$150 a month. It's not one of those spam sites with unrealistic goals like $1500/month or anything but hey...an extra $150 helps right?!) At the end of the month you get a real paper check in the mail.
Go to my yahoo 360 page and read my blog about it for more info or message me if you want more information on it. It really is a good deal. AND it's free to sign up

yes below poverty level.

that depends where you live. i live in LA and that would be close to homeless but i was born and raised in Louisiana and that would be just fine for that area.

yes in most parts of the country.

time to visit library to find ways to increase incomes.
no body brands the poor any more , they often just accept it.
most multi millionaires were poor.
they just went to library to find out how to become wealthy.

If you're in Old Mexico you'll live like a king.

Nice Planet- I'll Take It
thats around my yearly income, but its just me, so... I never realized I was poor.

I would imagine they would be below the federal poverty level and would be eligible for many programs and the Earned Income Credit.

F
Not necessarily.

Depends on how much of your income goes towards mortgage, bills etc. If you have a small mortgage and minimal loans etc you could be very comfortable on $23000.

Yes dear, $23,000 a year for a family of 4 is considered very poor by the government of the USA.
Sorry to hear about your situation, but there are some things you can do, such as further your education to increase your earnings. You could start a home based business, which is recommended even if you were making $50,000 a year. Find something you would love to do, research it and then find the time to pursue it. It is easier than you think to start a business at home.

One of the most attractive business for people in your situation is mlm. No, not like the one's you are thinking about, but real mlm opportunities. This way, you can help others who are also in your position and make money in the process!

I would say yes. But, depending on where you live not so bad. I live in Minnesota. That would be very hard for 4 people to live in on the MPLS-St. Paul metro area, or in any of the other bigger cities or towns. But, in some smaller cities in Northern Minnesota, I assume you could do just fine. You would probably qualify for some forms of government assistance: medical care, child care for both parents to work, or food.

Povery has many dimensions. Money is related to material poverty. A family of 4 with an earning of $23,000 can be considered poor or even rich depending on whether the goods and services the money can buy, i.e. food, cloth, accomodation, medical services, etc. is sufficient for the family to live normal life.
There is also a relative dimension of poverty, i.e. how does the family's money income compare with others. Poverty cut-off point is usually defined nationally and with regard to economic group the country belong. Eg. In less developed countries, $1 a day is regarded as poverty-line cut-off point.

If you live in the U.S., that income is considered very poor.

Here's the official report:
http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/07poverty.shtml

You can see in the table that $20,650 is the poverty line for a family of 4 according to 48 states; $25,820 is the poverty line in Alaska & $23,750 in Hawaii.

I believe most federal and state programs for financial assistance to the needy are based on 150-175% of the guidelines. In other words, if you take $20,650 x 1.75, it would be $36,137.50.

So, I think that means that a family of 4 earning less than $36,000 annually would be eligible for some financial assistance programs. Check with your local Dept. of Job & Family Services for more info (it might have a slightly different name in your area).

I would say poor. With cost rising for most items, it would be really hard to survivie.
